MORGANTOWN -- The Women's National Invitation Tournament championship game is coming to Charleston.
West Virginia saw to that tonight, first by drawing a crowd of 3,025 to the Coliseum, then by fighting off a determined Temple team in the tournament's semifinals.
The Mountaineers finally put away the Owls, 66-58 in overtime, withstanding a barrage of Temple 3-pointers and their own missed layups to do so.
West Virginia will now face UCLA in the WNIT championship game. The game will be played at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center. WVU won the right to host the game by drawing the best attendance numbers in the tournament, but can't hot the game at the Coliseum because of an NCAA gymnastics regional.
UCLA beat Michigan in the other WNIT semifinal, 69-65.
After fighting back from deficits throughout the second half, West Virginia never trailed in overtime. Brianna Holmes, who finished with 22 points, scored on a drive to the basket, then Averee Fields, who scored 20, hit a pair of shot jump shots. The second of those was a three-point play that made the score 60-55 and the Mountaineers never really were in trouble after that.
