Before I can answer, it would depend upon the definition of "success" you want to use. Super Bowls? Championships? Winning seasons? Hall of Fame career? Longevity? Overall record?
You establish the metrics and we will apply it to both of them and see which one measures up the best.
For the second part, I'd say O'Brien is working out well for BC. He's still employed there. BC's standards of success may or may not be what WVU expects so as long as he is employed he's ok. For Edwards at ASU, not so much as he was fired.

My point is that you guys are quick to point out "Rich Rod never won without Pat White", yet you claim that Belichick is a "Hall of Fame" coach (which he is), but would he have been that HOF coach without Brady? (ANS: Absolutely NOT). To claim that UNC got the better coach simply because Belichick benefited from the greatest QB in NFL history is just not right.
At the end of the day Wren has bills to pay. It also takes an insane amount of $$$ to compete in todays f'd up world of collegiate athletics. You want warm & fuzzy? Go follow Neal. RR is our best shot in being competitive again.
I wonder if Wren was aware that the overwhelming majority of coaches that leave a program and come back to coach it again are less successful the second time around.
Of course they all aren't but the odds are in favor of him not being as successful the second time around. A reasonable person would temper their expectations. I know many are excited about the redemption story and want to believe the Product is going to bring the program to new heights, but it is all talk and hype at this point. He didn't even have any P4 head coaching offers after being let go from Arizona. Do you think every other P4 program is missing something that only WVU knows about?
After winning CUSA by destroying his opponent in the title game, he would’ve eventually in the near or immediate future gotten a P4 HC position. It was inevitable. Would it happen this year? Maybe so. Maybe UNC, Purdue would’ve been interested. Maybe if he won again at Jacksonville next year, he would’ve landed the position. Believe whatever you want. The constant whining isn’t gonna change it. If he fails, he will be gone in a few years.
First, I never made that point about Rod. At any time. That is an assumption you are making.
My belief is this - was Rod the BEST choice for the job and on what criteria was that based upon? That is not an unreasonable question. If the answer is WVU has a very narrow and limited budget for the next head coach and he is the best that would accept the job for that price then yes, he's the best choice. But that is about the only criteria that I would agree he is the BEST choice.
The point you missed isn't about Tom Brady at all. It's about which coach can bring in the best talent. That doesn't necessarily mean you will win more. It does however mean you will have a BETTER chance of winning if you do. A man of Belichick's stature doesn't come around often so I believe he will have a much better chance of getting better players for his program than Rod will. These are the types of coaches I believe WVU needs to take the next step and actually compete for the conference year-in and year-out. I could be right, I could be wrong. Time will tell...
The donors need to be giving full support to whomever the coach is. This is the way it works at the big-time programs. You are not guaranteed anything on your investment and in most cases, you don't get the results you want. You're not going to get the top up and comers to come here if you don't show a willingness to invest.
