UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Aug. 28, 2024) – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, Aug. 29, to take on No. 12 Penn State. Kickoff at Jeffrey Field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Thursday’s match will broadcast on B1G+, while live stats from the game also are available at WVUsports.com.

This week’s contest marks the 24th all-time meeting between West Virginia and Penn State, as the Nittany Lions hold a 13-7-3 advantage in the series. In last season’s matchup in Morgantown on Aug. 24, PSU went ahead early, but an impressive goal from forward Taylor White in the 53rd minute tied things up. The match remained tied until the 85th minute when Penn State scored the go-ahead, game-winner to seal a 2-1 win over WVU.

The two teams have a storied history, with matchups in 14 of the last 15 seasons, including at least two contests in four different seasons. WVU and PSU have met as ranked opponents in 10 of the last 13 matches, dating back to the 2012 meeting.

Last time out, West Virginia suffered its first loss of the season with a 3-0 falter at Clemson on Aug. 23. The Mountaineers (2-1) fell behind early when the Tigers found the back of the net in the 13th minute, then added two more scores in the 21st and 32nd minutes to essentially seal the match. Clemson led 12-7 in shots and 5-2 in shots on goal, while the Mountaineers bested the Tigers in corner kicks, 4-3.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth relieved starting keeper Mackenzie Smith in the second half and was vital in keeping the Tigers off the board in the second frame. She added one save while intercepting several dangerous crosses from the Clemson offense.

After scoring a pair of goals and an assist against Radford on Aug. 18, White is pacing the Mountaineer offense once again this season. She leads the team in goals (2) and points (5), while she is tied with seven other players for the team lead in assists (1).

Erica Dambach is in her 17th season as the head coach at Penn State, with an overall mark of 316-131-32. PSU is 2-1 so far this season, after posting a 16-3-4 overall record in 2023 that saw a trip to the Elite Eight during the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The Nittany Lions are coming off an impressive, 5-0 win over West Chester on Aug. 25. Kaitlyn MacBean and Aubrey Kulpa co-lead the team with a trio of goals on the year.
