...to genuinely surprise you in a good way.

I started this after finding myself guilty of putting some pretty high expectations on this kid. Especially after seeing what he did as a FR at UF and what the staff is saying about him now.

To start with a pretty high bar....Geno Smith 2012

71% completion rate
4200 yds
42 TDs
6 INTs

Now this will be with a MUCH better running game and defense than Geno ever had. So you would assume a few more possessions/game, but less passes per game.

Is Grier capable of these numbers in 2016? That's a big glass of kool aid to drink, but I'm feeling thirsty....I say yes.

No. That's not the offense we will be running. I think if he finishes with 3200 yards passing and 500 yards rushing we'll consider it a season for the ages.

Grier was nothing special at Florida. He's undersized, especially if he's off the PEDs.

All he has to do is duplicate Howard's numbers this year but cut out some of the TOs

If this time next season we are 9-1 or even 10-0...... wouldn't that be good enough?

The only numbers that matter: 11-1. That isn't happening.

I hope Grier can read the field, be smart with the ball and not be forced to throw only short or deep. The intermediate routes are what separates fair from really good. Well that and not throwing the ball to the other team.

I'll be honest though, I think this coronation of Grier is premature. Isn't there a competition? There should be.

I don't see how he was supposed to have "taken over" when Howard was clearly going to start all year.

Seriously? Grier is the best transfer QB we've gotten since Hostetler. If he keeps his TO's low, this team can do great things.

Jake Kelchner wasn't too shabby of a transfer either.

And to put Grier in that company says a lot. I thought he was decent at Florida but to quote Bill Parcells, "let's put away the anointing oil til he's won a few ball games."

That was his one game against an elite Ole Miss defense that year. I like this video because it isn't just a highlight film. It showed his misses and a botched snap and a fumble as well. That defense was in his mug all day and he's still droppin' dimes.

Even then, his intermediate throws were spot on and his longer throws were only where his receiver could get them.

I'll also say that none of those FL WRs that year are as good as what we'll have back next year.

Never mind this thread. I never should have doubted myself. This kid's going to be awesome.

Still, we are going to have a hard time finding wins. 5 Big XII games on the road (at least one guaranteed loss at OU - TCU/BU possibly another two), a refreshed Texas, then our OOC...

He would need a Heismanesque season for us to see double-digit wins. I don't care if he throws for 5000 yards and 40 TDs if we are still 7-5.

Do you realistically see Chugs or Saunders beating him out for the position? We aren't signing a 5-star QB in February.
Have we ever signed a 5 star QB. Yet we still win despite it. You can't just hand a starting job to somebody that has not taken a snap in what 1 1/2 years.Has never played in this offense. Give it a rest and wait for it to truly happen. This way you won't fall on your ass with the high expectations.

Just listen to any comment Dana has about him. He has been running Dana's offense in practice since he got here. VT might be interesting since that will be his first game and it's against a good team, but once he gets the rust off, he will be killing it.

I'm so excited that they claimed a starter before this season was even over. I bet the backups are glad they don't have to go through competition for the job.

High expectations? The question was what kind of numbers would Grier have to put up next year to genuinely surprise me? I said 11-1, but it isn't happening. Next year smells like another 8-win season, but I'd say the margin of error is +/- 1 win. We don't win at OU. If Randolph is back, we might not beat OSU in Morgantown. We'll likely get clobbered in Fort Worth and/or Waco. Texas might come out of their funk with the new coaching staff. That's 5 possible losses right there without even talking about going to K-State (unless Snyder retires) or having what could be a resurgent ISU team next year. That's all assuming we can go 3-0 in OOC, too.

My expectations for this program are nonexistent - they suck when they have good expectations and they shock everyone when no one expects them to do anything. I was merely answering the question in the OP. However, I will say that unless we somehow snag a 5-star John Elway clone or Grier gets in more trouble, that he'll be starting at QB next year. Crest is on defense, Chugs hasn't gotten more than a couple meaningful snaps and hasn't impressed, and Saunders is an unknown. Grier has played in college and the only wildcard is how well he adapts to the system. He is not what will determine this team's success. I chalk that up to reloading our defense and our O-line. We should have three RBs minimum ready to go, several key receivers, and Askew-Henry in the defensive backfield as knowns. The rest, including Grier, we will see.

I have faith in our OLine. Wickline seems to have been a great pickup as OC and is helping there as well. Plus we seem to be getting a significant number of recruits there as well each year. You would assume the law of averages would work there.

DLine will be an issue, although the FR looked good this year. We do not seem to get the numbers there that I would like. That puts a lot of pressure to coach every single kid up, since depth is always an issue there.

Baylor is going to suck for for a while. They are getting killed in recruiting and just wait until the NCAA drops the bomb there. They will likely be the pre-RGIII Baylor there before long.

TCU will be better. OU will be about the same. OSU will be similar as well. UT with Herman will be great in a few years. Not next year.

I think 10-2 is attainable next year as well.
