What is your main reason for Williams regression?

I know the kid had a double double against Florida but something is just not right. I have a hard time believing he just got the big head and is trying to hard to take over. I really haven't seen anything to say Williams is being developed properly so I'm going to say its coaching. Not Huggins coaching but Martin's coaching. What do you think?

I think its a combination of several "things" with fatigue being the first thing to consider. Also whats his work ethic like, does he go the extra "mile". Ego and arrogance are other factors. Ive seen nothing that suggest "ego" problems. Lastly the pressure to win can have negative effects. IMO i think its mostly fatigue and the pressure to win.

Better competition with bigs that are clearly more athletic. Not stronger just more mobile and better passing skills with less turnovers. Fouls and playing time as a result has been a huge factor but other than stupid fouls at mid court better bigs are causing a lot of the foul trouble. That said, Williams is getting fouled but has cooled way off at the foul line. Frustration may be a factor at the foul line.

I think the upgrade in competition is the biggest factor. The deficiencies in our half court offense become more apparent against good teams. In addition to the obvious outside shooting woes which make it difficult for us to stop teams from packing the interior, we are a bad passing team. We are poor both at making the entry pass to the post and Williams and Macon are also less than proficient at passing out of the post when the D collapses on the ball.

We end up with too many offensive fouls, travels and TOs. Williams and Macon also just plain miss too many close range shots.

Huggins says he is pressing, trying to do too many things he's incapable of doing.. I'll go with that.

Deception is not in DW's bag of tricks. The 'muscle' move is not effective when the defenders have been coached to foul DW to the bench and outta game. To be relative.............you have to be on the floor.

I agree with taking note of what Huggs says. He is pressing.
But why is he pressing?

IMO, he is pressing because, as already noted, he is more regularly facing more athletic players ... AND he is trying to speed up his game.

Even when the competition wasn't as fierce DW showed a tendency to stand there with the ball before shooting, passing, or making a move. I can't tell you how many times I've said out loud, "Get rid of the ball!"

Others noted that he often held onto the ball a second or two too long. But as he has tried to speed up his game he is facing quicker more athletic players. And this is a problem. I think its a big problem.

I think the fundamental problem is that often, not always, but often DW isn't able to read/react to the game at game speed. He's either too slow or moves too quickly and then does the wrong thing. He just doesn't seem to be able to play at game speed.

I am sure that DW is one of those players that Huggs was referring to when he said that the guys need to learn to do what they can do and quit trying to do things they can't.

I think the answer to the question is simple.
But I don't know what the solution is. I guess he's just going to have to keep persevering and hopefully the light comes and he starts doing the things he actually can do and then he has to do them at the speed of the game.

Tries to muscle everything...offensively and defensively....not very athletic just strong....not fluid or smooth at all....way overmatched in BIG 12.....never looks to pass first when double teamed.....likes the "Truck" move.. Dribble thru everyone and everything

Running into bigger more athletic defenders. He nor many others will make a living trying to take them on one on one and out physical them. He is going to have to pick his spots and look to get the ball in a better physical position. Simply throwing him the ball with his back to the basket and asking him to make an athletic move is not going to end well and more times than not will result in a bad shot or charging violation. Kid plays hard, just going to have be a little more cerebral & get himself in a better offensive position to score. Nothing wrong with knocking down the 10 foot jump shots either.

Double teams, foul trouble, Holton improving his FG % by 9% and therefore demanding more touches also hurts Devin's stats.

Bingo......

Strong kid, but not a real leaper, not quick of feet. Wish he could find that 10 foot jump shot Joe Alexander developed. Huggins has always said he is a gym rat and a hard worker. I'd tell him to rebound, rebound, and rebound. Block out and rebound. Then rebound again.

Rumors of his demise were greatly exagerrated. Phenomenal game out of Williams tonight and lots of other contributors. Awesome.
