–Spring football is here and you could tell it was spring with how many players were moving around. The Mountaineers worked a lot of individual work as well as some tempo and ball security. The weather definitely cooperated and there was a lot of energy to start things. No pads today.
–There are no depth charts here so don’t take it that way. It's just a reflection of who was working where during individual reps of a specific period. In the opening tempo, Garrett Greene was the quarterback and was joined by Jahiem White at running back, Will Dixon at tight end, with the wide receivers being Traylon Ray, Jarel Williams and Preston Fox. But remember these groups continued to rotate. The offensive line was LT Wyatt Milum, LG Sullivan Weidman, C Brandon Yates, RG Ja’Quay Hubbard and RT Nick Malone. A second group that worked consisted of LT Johnny Williams, LG: Maurice Hamilton, C Laden Livingston, RG: Nick Krahe and RT: Xavier Bausley.
–Jaden Bray is smooth and explosive. Had a nice catch on a screen and was able to cut up field and get yards showing some really nice burst. He has a good look about him as well as he seems to be one of the most physically put together pass catchers out there.
–Garnett Hollis looks the part as a long cornerback with great size. He stands out in that room because he definitely looks every bit of his 6-foot-1 listed height but he also has the appearance of more of a safety body. Jaheem Joseph is much bigger than I thought as well and can play a lot of different spots. I think both of those guys are going to be able to help.
–At the end we saw some tempo with the offense and defense cycling out players through various groups. The first full defense on the field consisted of:
DL: Sean Martin, Fatorma Mulbah, Eddie Vesterinen
LB: Josiah Trotter, Caden Biser, Tyrin Bradley
DB: Aubrey Burks, Jaheem Joseph, Montre Miller, TJ Crandall, Aden Nelson
A second defensive group was:
DL: TJ Jackson, Corey McIntyre, Hammond Russell
LB:Trey Lathan, Reid Carrico, Ty French
DB: Raleigh Collins, Zae Jennings, Israel Boyce, Garnett Hollis, Ayden Garnes
But those units continued to rotate between each other over a series of sets. The same can be said on the offensive end as Greene operated as the first quarterback and Marchiol the second.
–I thought Marchiol stood in and threw the ball well in this period as he connected on Rodney Gallagher on a deep passing play across the field and then hit EJ Horton. You can see what the coaches talked about with him having more confidence and understanding at the position. Traylon Ray definitely looks like he's added some good weight.
–Greene lasered one into Hudson Clement as well and had some nice touch on some other throws.
--Jaylen Anderson looked decisive and ran well albeit in a limited situation without pads. But it was encouraging to see the backup running hard.
–TJ Johnson was working with the wide receivers today and didn’t do anything that I noticed with the tight ends. It seems he is filling that role as a big slot pass catcher and had a nice grab at the end.
–Physically the team looks good and players like Josiah Trotter really stand out physically. I think this has been a process and continues to improve with the way the team looks.
–No surprises on the injury front as everybody that Brown had outlined previously was either limited or was not participating. Kole Taylor was out there running and CJ Donaldson was participating in non-contract drills. As for the others such as Asani Redwood, Jario Faverus, Tomas Rimac and Bryce Biggs they were on the sidelines either doing work or not participating.
