--West Virginia head coach Neal Brown felt that the fans that stayed did a great job in that game and it was very important to win.
--The thing on special teams the operations with Austin Brinkman snapping the ball and Graeson Malashevich did a great job holding. Oliver Straw might have had the best game he's had punting and they had no returns. They fumbled a ball that West Virginia should have recovered. Mike Hayes made two big field goals and Preston Fox has three returns for 45-yards. He would have had closer to 60 if they wouldn't have had a penalty. Catching punts is the hardest thing to do in football especially in that weather. Kickoff coverage wasn't good enough but they had a big return called back. The Drae McCray kid is really fast which is why they tried so hard to get him but they have to do a better job.
--Defensively they started extremely fast. Texas Tech usually comes out of the game fast and four out of the first five drives were really fast and they got aligned with tempo. Coverage was much improved and the front was good. West Virginia got tired at the end. They didn't play as well late and they missed tackles late and got high. They can play the run better and some of that was because of the light box. Offensively, the offensive line and tight ends played really well. Wyatt Milum and Zach Frazier played at an elite level. The offense had two huge answers after Texas Tech scored. A long touchdown drive after the field goal to make it 7-3 and it was 13-10 after they scored a touchdown and they immediately came back with a touchdown drive. They didn't play well enough at running back or receiver and they have to make more plays. The pass game has to be better and they have to do a better job executing. They have to make plays in space.
--O lineman of the week was Zach Frazier who graded out at 94-percent. Special teams was Preston Fox. Defensive player of the week was Marcis Floyd as Brown felt he played really well. Offensive Player of the Week was Wyatt Milum and had five knockdowns and was dominant. Eddie Vesterinen was the blue collar player of the week on defense and Treylan Davis on offense. Scout team players were Tyler Evans on offense, Tyler Cain on defense and Deuce Shabazz on special teams.
--TCU does a really good job. The Mountaineers lost a tough one here last year. This is the last opportunity before West Virginia gets a much needed bye. This is about proving if they will be a contender in the league or not. West Virginia is going on the road and they need to take advantage of that opportunity. TCU always has great returners and they do again this year. Offensively, TCU plays with tempo and they are committed to the run. The Horned Frogs will throw it but they want to run. Chandler Morris is very good. TCU has a good mix with little guys that can run, big guys that can body them up and a good mix overall of pass catchers. It's a seasoned group offensively. Defensively it's a three down group, three safeties. The defense is good in the red zone and good at taking the ball away. The nose guard is very good.
--Garrett Greene was available on Saturday but didn't warm up well. He was emergency ready but they would have had to help him out. They don't want to play him until he is ready. He doesn't have anymore than that. If he can practice Tuesday or Wednesday he can play. Keyshawn Cobb is out for the year but has a redshirt.
--Sean Boyle and Scotty Keane are competing for that backup spot.
--Wide receivers have to make plays. Devin Carter didn't play as well as they need him to play. His grandmother passed away late in the week and he thinks that bothered him. EJ Horton needs to play more. Hudson Clement and Traylon Ray need to play more. They had chances on screens and didn't break tackles.
--Jaheim White needs to practice better but they need him. They want to play him because he will make them better but he needs to prove that to his teammates.
--CJ Donaldson didn't finish runs as hard as he can. They need to do a better job getting him the football in space.
--West Virginia is doing a better job in zone coverages and eight and seven man drops they are covering people. They are creating more pressure and getting in some more friendly down and distances.
--Two types of leverage pad leverage and hand leverage but if you play high you're going to get a bunch of holding calls. They spent a lot of time playing lower and playing with their elbows tight. They are doing a better job with their eyes in the secondary but there is an intentionality and they have invested dollars because they paid to have their referees in spring and fall camp. They had to get better. They've had some ill-timed penalties and some ones frustrating to him. They're not getting the false starts and procedure stuff in the past.
--This is the best totality offensive line and defensive line they've had.
--Jacolby Spells continues to progress and did a good job on special teams. At safety, they rotated those three guys. Lance Dixon played the best game in his career here on defense. Continuing to work Aden Nelson and Josiah Jackson at safety. Andrew Wilson-Lamp has turned into a high level special teams player and will continue to get work.
--TCU mixes up their coverage more than most with the three safety looks.
--West Virginia needs to win and the goal is to get into November with a chance to win the league. You have to defend home turf and you have to go beat quality teams on the road in league play. This is the next opportunity and a team they played well against last year but not good enough to win. They have to prove that they're a contender. They are 1-0 but he isn't sure they won national attention.
--Brown said it doesn't matter until Greene is healthy because he won't start unless he can do his strengths which is his athleticism.
--Brown has always stayed in touch with Sonny Dykes since he was his coach.
--West Virginia has had a four-down mentality in the red zone. They've held things and done some different things formationally and some shift and motions that they've held in the open field and using them down in the red zone. And they're just better.
