I know the odds are against this happening, so don't go all crazy on me; just indulge an old man. We all know WV was not ranked preseason. They are now what, 28th in the AP poll? If they, or any other non 'darling' of the national sports media in a similar situation, were to go undefeated, which would likely mean defeating at least 4 ranked teams, could they make up enough ground in the polls to make the playoff. Conventional wisdom, if you can call it that, that has prevailed in the media lately says that a team not ranked in the top 25 at the start of the season can't make the playoff. Hardly seems fair to me. But, I've been following college football for 56 years so I've given up most hope that it will ever be fair or logical.

Others have said that rankings should not happen until after the 4th week. There is a whole crapload of things that aren't fair. Sometimes you have to be twice as good to be considered equal.

No not fair. Sometimes you have to be better just to be considered equal.

If the scenario you outline were to (happily) happen, I have no doubt whatsoever they can ignore us being in a P5, and the improbabilty of 4 other teams going undefeated...I would honestly eat my hat if this were not the case...

Week 2, we're undefeated and haven't had a single point scored on us. Not so unlikely from where I'm standing up here on faith mountain. Don't judge me. I'm a happy camper.

If...IF WVU is undefeated (not happening) at the end of the regular season, they would absolutely be in the playoff. No doubt about it.

The selection committee determines the rankings now and the first comes out Nov 3. Where WVU is now or was preseason as far as rankings has much less "meaning" than before.
Just win.

If this team goes undefeated, it is, in my opinion, in the play-off. If we beat Oklahoma there will be talk of WVU being a dark-horse candidate for the Four.

If the defense actually is good and remains consistent, and the offense shows steady improvement, this team "could" go undefeated. It will, however, take the ball bouncing our way a couple of times in some key games for that to happen. But that's football, eh?
