NORMAN — David Boren doesn’t expect any landscape-changing decisions at next week’s Big 12 Conference meetings in Irving, Texas.

Following Thursday morning’s OU Board of Regents meeting, The University of Oklahoma president met with reporters for a 54-minute session where he shared his ideas for the conference.

His goal, he said, is to see the 20-year-old league not only prosper for the next few years, but deep into the future.

After the conference was bruised following the departures of Nebraska, Texas A&M, Missouri and Colorado, the league was on shaky ground, he said.

“We went through a traumatic period in the Big 12 … The question was would the Big 12 survive. It probably was on the edge of the cliff more than people thought,” Boren said. “I think having come through all of that and we all looked at each other and said, ‘Hey, we don’t want the Big 12 to fail. We want the Big 12 to be strong and stable.’

“I think having gone through that process, the connection between the schools and the presidents become even stronger,” he added. “It’s kind of like going through a serious illness and surviving. You are stronger than ever. The people who have gone through it with you have bound together. I think that’s what has happened. I do not know of one member of this conference who either wants to leave it or see it collapse.”

Here are some highlights from his question-and-answer session with reporters.

That's what I want to hear. Go forward as a group, consider all the alternatives from all perspectives, don't be hasty, try to let every school have their input, but put the well being of the conference above all individual interests. I can live with the outcome of that process what ever it is.
