Seriously what is the point? Can't he stay focused on any long term goal without lashing out at Mueller the FBI?

Since it seems that he can't fire Mueller all he is left to do is to try to discredit the investigators and the investigation.
This has always been his M.O., try to control the message by constantly fueling it.

He can't. Since AG Sessions recused himself, DAG Rosenstein is the only one who can fire or discipline special council. Even then there has to be cause to fire Mueller. A special counsel may be disciplined or removed from office only by the personal action of the Attorney General (or in this case, the acting attorney general). And Rosenstein can’t just do it on a whim, supposedly. According to the regulations, special counsel can only be removed “for misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity, conflict of interest, or for other good cause, including violation of Departmental policies. Of course the President could fire Rosenstein & install someone who would fire Mueller.
