Last year's Sweet 16 run proves pivotal for No. 3 seed West Virginia
Heading into Friday's NCAA Tournament opener with Stephen F. Austin, West Virginia is considered a contender — and unlike last year, the Mountaineers have previous March Madness experience to draw from.
West Virginia reached the Sweet 16 last season without a single player with NCAA Tournament experience, and this season's Big Dance should prove to be a little bit calmer for the veteran squad.
“We're just a little bit more comfortable with it,” senior guard Jaysean Paige said. “We're able to have a little bit more experience with it on the court. For the most part I didn't get to do too much in the NCAA Tournament (last year), hopefully this year will be a little bit different.”
This season's Mountaineers (26-8) already come in with experience playing in multiple high-pressure games. On top of their Sweet 16 run last season, the Mountaineers finished 13-5 in a deep Big 12 and reached the finals of the conference tournament.
And if there's one lesson the Mountaineers took away from being in those kind of situations, it's the importance of locking up wins early and resting up for the games to come.
