From Football Scoop, thought this was interesting with all of the bashing we do concerning our assistant coaches in football and basketball. I think Stew may have started our normal 2-year deal with with the thought that WVU could maintain their better coaches.

Back in early January we shared a report from Texas beat writer Anwar Richardson that stated:

Texas: Tom Herman plans to retain Stan Drayton (running backs), Drew Mehringer (wide receivers), Derek Warehime (tight ends), Oscar Giles (defensive line), Jason Washington (corners), Craig Naivar (safeties/special teams) and Corby Meekins (wide receivers), tweets Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods. Each coach’s contract is set to expire on March 31.

That’s pretty standard this time of year. With each of those coach’s deals set to expire, you’d expect to see a few of them sign multi-year deals after doing a good job with coaching, player development, recruiting, and everything else that going into coaching, while a guy or two in that group inks a one-year deal.

However, that’s not how the situation has panned out, as Anwar Richardson tweeted this morning that Drayton, Mehringer, Warehime, Giles, Washington, Naivar, and Meekins all recently signed one-year deals.

The reasoning? Richardson shares that Tom Herman’s goal is to avoid staff complacency coming off a 10-4 season.

Anwar shared, via a source, that Herman’s message to his staff was; “If you’re elite at your job, you never have to worry. Be one of the best in the country at what you do and you’ll never have to worry about losing your job.”

At face value it seems may be an interesting and worthwhile strategy, but what happens in a year when the NFL or other programs come with offers of more job security and more money?

Only time will tell.

Stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.

UT assistants Stan Drayton (RB), Drew Mehringer (WR), Derek Warehime (TE/ST coord), Oscar Giles (DL), Jason Washington (CB), Craig Naivar (S/co-DC) & Corby Meekins (WRs) recently signed one-year deals instead of multiple years. Was told Herman's goal is to avoid staff complacency
