It does look like depth could be a problem but this team looks good! Thoughts?

I thought we looked good. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of play. I didn't have a good feel for this team, but turn the page on this weekend with a positive outlook based on the play and effort we put forward.

Got a relatively easy game and bye week to prepare for BYU. I'd say if WVU isn't sharper on the 24th, it doesn't bode well for conference play.

Do you realize that we played like the 3rd ranked team in defense last year and they basically had everyone back? They had the 5th ranked pass defense in the country and like the 11 ranked run defense.

They held 7 teams to 10 points or less last year.

Did we have some problems in the passing game? A few. But that team had the whole off season to prepare for what we do. We had the same scheme coming back and the same players. We had no clue what their offense was going to look like yet we held them to 3 points with our 1st team defense.

C'mon man.

I think you overestimate Mizzou as a team. They have a good defense, but we left opportunities out there that had to do with our execution rather than their play. The same can be said for our D that left plenty of guys open, but Lock (despite not being pressured) was off target or the receiver dropped a very catchable ball. Again, not saying Mizzou is a crap team, but I think we have at least 5 harder games, including the BYU game, coming up that will not be as forgiving of leaving guys open or getting shut down within the 10 yard line.

Watching BYU last night - their offense is probably better than Missouri but not the defense. Of course basing most of this defense on last year (since most of it is back this year) - we are talking about a team that only gave up more than 21 points in a game twice last year. Have to consider how bad their offense was and that defense was still able to accomplish that, even while having an offense that was giving the ball to the other team quickly at times.

Howard still has some reads and throwing accuracy probs to work on but overall had a decent day. Offensive line stepped up big time yesterday.

I was pleased.
Red zone offense was atrocious, of course. WVU needs a hammer to run the ball inside the 5, even if Dana has to take a defensive lineman or linebacker to do it with. We really miss the facemask buster in 2016. He was awesome!
Skyler showed great improvement from the 2nd quarter on for his selection of receivers and throwing to the one in the open.
And it was Missouri, which is known for its defense.
Also, the 26-11 score was misleading, since the Missouri ones got the only TD against the WVU twos. Dana was right to use the twos because that will come in handy down the road if the starters get hurt or go off the rails.
Gibson's rebuilding of the defense that supplied the NFL with 6 bodies, 4 via the draft, is astonishing. The AD made it clear he doesn't want to lose Gibby. I agree with Lyons on that.
The secondary improved in the 2nd half of the long pass coverage, looking for the ball more than just trying to run alongside the receiver the way they did in the second half.

My alma mater isn't ready for the national playoffs yet, but it was a good opening game. Check out what Tennessee, Clemson, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, LSU, UCLA, even Stanford, Michigan State, TCU, Iowa, Georgia, Florida did and be glad you're a WVU fan.

Season openers always have more glitches than any other game. There's major improvements as the season goes along. I'm sure Dana will get more backups in the game against Youngstown if all goes as it should against that level of competition, because we'll need ones and twos ready to play BYU.

If WVU is 3-0, we still won't know whether Dana will rise above his 4-5 Big 12 season average. But we'll feel a lot better than we would if WVU is 2-1.
God, I missed college football. It was the longest summer of my life. Thank God I played 102 rounds of golf, so far, to pass the time away waiting for Mountaineer football to resume.

I thought our performance was par for what a good team should do against a decent opponent. It is really hard to gauge how good or bad the level of play was until both teams have some measuring stick games so Im not going to go crazy one way or another. After yesterday I think this team proved that they definitely do not "suck", and the upside is there for 9+ wins, so I am pleasantly surprised because I didnt give this team much of a chance this year and was already looking forward to next year with Grier in the mix, so the primary takeaway from yesterday for me was is that our floor should be 6 wins but not really sure how high the bar should be beyond that.

This board will see an exponential number of replies of "pleasant surprises" such as this one in the coming weeks. The most important opinions are those of the members of this team and I think they proved something to themselves in this game and in their hearts that they can win if they keep working and getting better. It never matters what people think about you or your team but instead what you know. Now, they know so watch them improve far beyond expectations. Belief is a powerful force!
