Short, Fast, & Twitchy Tailbacks will be a big test for Lee K & our DL+LB core. Ive been watching some of Pitts camp interviews, and they seem to think they have great OL & DL fronts, thats a main topic. A couple of pitts OL are 6th year players, so it would seem this war will truly be won in the trenches, and how well WVU negates Pitts Big play potential from their very twitchy RB core. The optimism regarding Lee K will surely be put to the test early and often in this game.

I was watching their game vs MSU in the bowl game. Pitt was the better team, but had to play their 3rd string QB, and lost the game in the last minute, so the score doesnt really reflect their quality as a team, and they didnt lose much aside from their QB & WR, which were major pieces but replaced to some degree(we'll see)..

Im very curious how Lesley adapts the starting 11 roster during the game to counter Pitt's Short & Shifty skillsets, and this will be a major test for both WVU's DL & OL early on, so we should get a good feeling of the potential of this team. That said, we have to account for a new QB, New OC, so it may take a few games before our offense finds its rhythm, which is both normal & logical. One can hope whomever starts for WVU at QB, has good timing with our WRs, and our OL play has truly taken a major step forward from last season. If our OL play hasnt taken major steps forward, I would actually prefer Garrett Greene to start at QB, because hes not a statue in the pocket and can create positive plays when they break down. However, if our OL has improved, then JTD would probably be the better option. Though, we shall see. I really like Greene, I think hes a natural leader, and just needed to develop as a passer some, because he didnt do it much in HS. Which takes time, and patience isnt a common trait among fans.. But, it is good that we have two very different types of QBs on the roster, so we can match the optimal player to the progression of the OL. I also think Greene's skillset helps create more space & lanes for the RB's too, because LB's have to account for him...

Its a bit weird to think, but whomever starts at QB may.... or at least could be dependent on how much progress our OL has made this offseason. That is if...... IF Greene's arm & sight has developed this offseason. Im simply partial to a dual threat type of QB, at least one with wheels good enough to escape the pocket and not be a liability.. We have to remember Greene is just a redshirt Soph, so hes still pretty young, as Collegiate QBs usually dont hit their stride until their Jun & Sen years. I think people placed unfair expectations on Greene last year as a RSFresh, learning a new system, with a young OL.. After-all Will Grier didnt really shine until his Senior year...

Any rate, absolutely ecstatic for this game. Its going to be a tough test for WVU esp our DL & OL fronts, as Pitt is also a well coached team, and there are many unknowns with WVU. That said, betting WVU wins more than 5.5 games is easy money... I think both teams will play to win the ToP, which will revert back to trench warfare... Either way, it will def be a good measuring stick for progress... Lets hope WVU gets one in the W column...

Losing their OC/QB coach is remarkably understated loss. He was elite in both roles. Slovis is also a step down as well.
Line play will be huge. Our RBs are pedestrian and their DLine is quite good. Neal needs to largely abandon the run this year and take advantage of what should be elite QB play. He needs to adjust to the talent, not the other way around.

I think our defense can hold sPitt to 24 points or less unless we have a bunch of turnovers. If our WRs catch some balls this year, we win this game and several others.

If Kenny Pickett played against Michigan State, Pitt wins by four touchdowns.
Is that what happened in the Western Michigan game. Back to your own piss hole fraud.

Pitt, a 14-point betting favorite, was ripped to shreds by the Broncos' run-pass-option offense. Quarterback Kaleb Eleby, completed 23 of 35 passes for 336 yards with three touchdowns. Most of his receivers were obtusely open, either because of poor coverage or ill-timed blitzes.

Look, I dont like Pitt, but they were a different team towards the end of the season. WVU(and our fans) are also very well versed with how much a team can decline when its starting QB is out, muchless both its starter & backup. Pitt was a better team, and while I dont know if they would have won by 4 TDs if Kenny P would have played, I do think they would have won the game.

Look at how far WVU dropped when Will Grier got hurt his Junior year, it was a completely different team from a quality perspective. A great collegiate QB can mask many holes on the roster, but Pitt still held their own in the game, and lost in the last minute or so.

Considering they didnt lose much outside of Kenny, Addison, and their OC, if Slovis is really QB1 material, Pitt should be pretty good this year. Their OL & DL are pretty good, which alone will be enough to win a few games, even if Slovis has trouble finding his rhythm before its to late.

Also, I do think WVU is better then what people(talking heads) are saying, I think they are negative simply due to the unknowns, but if those unknowns are better than a pessimists perspective, then WVU should be a 8 win team this year, even despite a tough schedule. If we improve from where we were last year, considering a few of our losses was just by 3-4 points, those types of losses should be wins this year.

I suppose some of that depends how good Mathis really will be, and if Justin J shows us why he was a 4 star RB. It sucks that Lyn J Dixon didnt work out, our RB room really needed his skillset to widen the diversity of attack, but from what IM hearing CJ Donaldson should be a factor in creating mismatches, tho not from a speed perspective, more like Size+Speed, which isnt exactly the same thing. I also think some of that will be dependent on if Mike O comes back 100% healthy, cause he can certainly be a difference maker in both the running & passing game this year.

There are a lot of unknowns with WVU, but if this staff did a good job in getting the right pieces, we should see a team that finds a way to win those close games this year, which will surely be enough to make an easy bet and a little personal Christmas bonus. I NEVER bet on sports, NEVER.... my day-job is essentially like betting with tested probabilities, but I think WVU is a lock for winning more than 5.5 games this year, which I think is super easy money. Ill def be pushing all my chips in on that one. Just have to find time to make it to the casino before the season starts.

Any rate, we'll see very soon how this shakes out. Good for us all that they'll be playing a good amount in the future too, so we can get back to this rivalry for a while at least. Perhaps a good dose of why rivalries are important, valued, & valuable...

Wish WVU played their wussy schedule.

Yeah, and Pitt would dominate and win the B1G each and every year if they were a member, per your butt hurt coach. Try winning the MAC first.

Wish WVU played their wussy schedule.
We found ways to lose games we should have won (Maryland, Texas Tech & Oklahoma) last year so our ability to play hard and clean for 4 QTRs was more critical than a wussy opponent. We have to learn how to put it all together and get the Ws. At this point in the season, with all the new pieces and opponent match ups its all Kool Aid.

All I have right now are questions:
  • Can we get Ws in close games?
  • Have we fixed our problems on the OL? Do we have an effective pair of OTs?
  • How much of an improvement will JT Daniels be as our QB? Down filed accuracy? Quicker decisions? Ability to stay healthy?
  • How will our new secondary an MLB perform?
  • Will our new offensive philosophy of fewer more efficient execution of plays be a winning one?
Need to see these things against a real opponent. Pitt on an away field meets that need in droves.

WVU is was still painfully in a rebuilding mode in several areas last year. Even so, if they would have had an accurate and composed QB it would have been an 8 win season despite all of the other shortcomings. Based upon anecdotal indications so far, there is reason to be optimistic that those shortcomings have been resolved pretty much across the board.

Pitt's coaching peers in the ACC expect them to take a backwards step this season especially with the loss of Pickett. The confidential consensus of those opposing coaches seems to be they will still be pretty good, but not a conference title contender. Time will tell.

Haha..... true true so true... Its easy to play a weak regular season schedule and "GET UP" for a big bowl game. Coaches dont have to throw the kitchen sink at everything during the regular season, so they still have bombs in the arsenal for a bowl game.

ACC has def been down the past few years, but we'll see if Miami starts to make a turn. They hired a quality staff and have been recruiting very well so far, but that will take a couple years I suspect.

Looking at Pitts OL, which was pretty good last year and they get everyone back for the most part, our DL will be put to the test. The trenches will be where this game is won, its cliché, but def true in this case. How much time can our OL give our QB, and will the QB+WR timing be negatively effected by Pitts DL rush.. ITs going to be fun to watch..... I hope haha

good analysis, good to get the brawl going again being a pitt fan would rather see the game played later in the season but we will see.

Pitt losing their OC, star WR Addison, and star QB will hurt them. New offense is more conservative, I think Pitt will struggle to put points on the board in this game. Pitt had a great offense last year and an inconsistent defense (Western Michigan). Historically we (Pitt fan here) shit the bed in big games. Last season was the exception. I think WV wins this game.

WVU can handle it.

WVUallen, you may and this is without a doubt be the most moronic poster of all time. I would venture to say Biden has more intelect so you really win the gold!!!!!

Sorry our our top 2 RB’s are far from pedestrian…add this to the addition of Donaldson who is beast and we have a very viable running game! Biggest Q is RT, who gets the call. Don’t be surprised if it is Nester & White man’s the the RG.

I hope you're right. I watched some scrimmage snaps with these guys and no one seemed to have jumped out as a clear alpha.
