We are doing something wrong in this country and throwing more money at it ain't gonna fix it . Every child has a chance at a education, every parent has a chance to watch their child blossom, not everyone takes advantage of it for whatever reason.

Again, those rankings and statistics are skewed BIG TIME. Many countries operate under different rules than the US system. For example, not every child is "educated" or "tested" like they are in the United States. Not to mention the fact that kids aren't motivated in the United States, especially in Appalachia, by their parents to "do better".

If you want my honest opinion, the way to increase test scores in our region of Appalachia and the inner cities..........tie student test scores to the amount of government assistance the family receives. The lowest scores are always the poor. That's a fact, not opinion. If they aren't motivated to learn because they have their "fall back plan" of drawing a check, then perhaps if they get that check taken from them (or their parents) that might motivate them a bit more. Don't you think?

I guess what I'm saying is that it isn't the Department of Education that is the problem. It's societal norms and values that have changed. Sure, some policies aren't great. But it's that inner motivating factor a person has that causes them to thrive. If you don't have it, then nothing, not even eliminating the "evil Department of Education" will correct it. Not to mention, the federal Department of Education accounts for 8-10% of state education budgets (someone can fact-check me). Eliminating it will not put a huge dent in the system, but it will cause local and state governments to look at other options for funding (ex. raising taxes).

I'm sure comparing test scores from other countries is not apples to apples. Dollar for Dollar we spend more to get less . That's a fact . We don't need to keep forking over money as we have been we need to fix the problem. I 100% agree our welfare system has helped lead us to this point . People have no pride or dignity in themselves ( I blame the outsourcing of our middle class jobs) and are completely content on living off the government. Cutting welfare is a tricky thing that needs to be done to push people to get things on there own and that would help our education crisis. Foodstamps used to be a disgrace now they are glorified. Parents are 100% percent responsible for their kids education not government and parents are failing miserably , I believe because Gov has lead them to believe it was there (Gov) responsibility to educate. People need to do with out so they will have to help themselves. I believe instead of giving people a hand up as what welfare was created for we have just started giving hand outs and made it acceptable instead of disgraceful.

The Department of Education at the federal level is a waste of money. Our metrics since its inception have only went down, and its budget has only grown. This experiment has reached its conclusion, and it's a failure.
