I will add that what I read on here is tantamount to why we're not listed. What a bunch of schmucks... mostly.
Won't go to game if we aren't "x or o"... and the coach is blamed for losing. I'll withhold my piggy bank money from my donations... I'll wear my green proudly...! I'll sulk in my Mom's basement. Those of you who fit this description are the least proud Mountaineers and the least proud of who I count as my colleagues.

And one day some of our fans will realize Kansas State is in Kansas, Iowa is in Iowa, Wisconsin is in Wisconsin and Nebraska is in Nebraska??

Or it could just be because of a diminished product on the field.

Population density folks. Draw a 50 mile radius around all these schools and add up the population living there. Then calculate what percentage of that population has to show up to fill up the seats. We aren't even in the top 11 in seating capacity - we probably wouldn't hit the top 25 in attendance even if we sold out every game. Some expectations are unreasonable.

Is that a fact ??? Guess you must be privy to something about this subject I'm not.....for example, do you happen to be the owner of Blue Lion Sports ??

WVU doesn't have to be the top in seating capacity to sell out what they have.

WVU doesn't have to be the top in seating capacity to sell out what they have.
That is not what I said. Obviously the Ducks aren't anywhere near the top of the stadiums in capacity but they sell it out because 1 - their population base is easily 3 times larger than ours and 2 - their performance on the field in conference and in bowls has created a lot of fan interest.

another thread meant to prove wvu is mediocre. tiresome. can we please have one dedicated thread for this?

And one day some of our fans will realize Kansas State is in Kansas, Iowa is in Iowa, Wisconsin is in Wisconsin and Nebraska is in Nebraska??

Your next assignment is to compare those states with WV in terms of levels of per-capita stress and neurosis, prescription drug use among adults AND children, over dose deaths, obesity, teen pregnancy, income levels, percentage of income spent on lottery tickets, and some other less than wonderful things where WV ranks very near the end of the wrong end of the scale.

Do that and then get back to us. WVU is in West Virginia. Deal with it. I am a native WV'n. But as wonderful of a place that it can be I simply quit lying to myself years ago about the state of things in WV.

Eugene is a good distance from other large cities in Oregon. They do have about triple the people in the metro area than Morgantown does. I didn't mention Oregon though--Iowa State is in a similar situation as Morgantown and they've just expanded their stadium due to demand despite faring far worse. Kansas State isn't near large population centers but do as well as the Mountaineers and had a worse record.

Texas Tech is also out a ways from the large population centers of that state.

There are many examples from around the country. WVU has a fickle fan base, and lots of people from the outside trying to turn that fanbase against the program--i.e. trying to get people to not attend games.

WVU's got over 100,000 people in the nearby area and sits within an hour of a major metropolitan area with plenty of Mountaineer fans with over 2.6 million people in it (and probably 100,000 WVU friends, family, fans etc. at least)

WVU may have fickle fans....but the amount of residents in any given state does matter. WVU isn't going to garnish much from those in the Pittsburgh area that don't have any other affiliation with the school other than where they reside.

--Oregon has over twice the population of WV. It matters...

--Iowa has about a 40% larger population than WV. It matters...

--Kansas has about a 35% larger population than WV. It matters...

--Texas has well over 20 times the population of WV. It matters...

Nebraska is the only real argument that the population of the state doesn't impact attendance. ...but that's a statistical anomaly (props to their fans though).

The operative word here is "fans"! We need to develop a few who support our programs and not try to diminish them or make excuses for "why not"!.

Just speaking for myself here, but maybe for a lot of other butts that used to fill the seats.........

There was a time when an average Joe like me could spend a couple days pay to take his entire family to a Mountaineer football game, that included the tickets, gasoline, parking, snacks from the concession stands, a game program, and a restaurant meal afterwards. These days, with tickets at over $50 for a back of the end zone seat, parking anywhere from $20 and up, outrageously priced concessions, and given our declining economy, people who used to go to the games simply can no longer afford to..............and if anyone thinks that the 70,000 plus crowds that used to fill Mountaineer Field were all WVU alumni, you are sadly mistaken. They were average Joes, and they would be there now if they didn't have to take out a loan to pay for it.

Well I was referring to the stadiums in the OP list. I made no comparisons to Iowa State or Kansas State or Texas Tech. Kudos to them. You could probably find lots of examples of equally fickle fan bases as WVU if you tried, and worse. If your fanbase includes people who look nostalgically at the days when we played Richmond (and it does) then there is an uphill battle. People piss and moan here every week that we don't have any natural rivals, don't play Pitt, dont play Penn State, don't play VT, you have an uphill battle with them. People like the poster below who cite the prices of attending a game are another issue, it isn't cheap entertainment to attend. When I went to school there, we always had a pretty rabid fanbase. The fickle ones will come back if there is a buzz around the program. 91% attendance is still pretty good given our record and the Stewart debacle if the numbers posted a couple of days ago are accurate. The original complaint was that we didn't make somebody's list of top 11 list of venues. Who gives a shit? Maybe we were 12th or 16th or 22nd. Meaningless in any case. The OP indicated that we didn't make that list because we have awful fans as represented by this free board. I read here pretty often and can only think of 10 or 12 people that might be awful fans all the time. Get a grip. These people don't represent the fanbase. Half of them are senile and the other half have their joystick in one hand and are picking zits with the other. At least the people who bitch care about something. We don't know how lucky we are.

Nebraska is a perfect example of fans caring about a program

Iowa State is as well for that matter because there is another even more popular program IN the same state within a couple of hours drive. Yet, ISU's fans show up despite a lack of success.

Pittsburgh fans might not matter, if there weren't 100,000 or more transplanted WVians and alumni of the school living IN the Pittsburgh metro area. There are also other metro areas with lots of WV fans nearby--within 3.5 hrs. Columbus, Akron/Canton, Charleston, Washington D.C.--many people and lots of those are WVU fans--not to mention all the smaller communities in between.

There's more population within 250 miles of WVU than many schools that do better in fan attendance

Agree the 12 or so moaners and groaners ruining this board (and others) don't represent the majority fanbase--but they've undoubtedly done everything they can to influence more to abandon WVU athletics.

My point--there are millions of people, many of them with affiliation or outright fandom to WVU within a few hours of WVU

People elsewhere pay more to see their programs and many of them are also in depressed areas.

WVUs fanbase isn't what it used to be.

Here are the number posted by Ignored Member a few days ago. His numbers for ISU were screwed up but WVU isn't doing awful. We just need a few more thousand fans on average to show up for the games.

Looking at capacity vs. attendance gives you a different ranking:
1. KSU - 50,000/53,100 - 106% capacity
2. (tie) OU - 82,112/85,357 - 103.9% capacity.
2. (tie) TCU - 45000/46767 - 103.9% capacity
4. Baylor - 45000/46,100 - 102% capacity
5. OSU - 60,218/57,668 - 95% capacity
6. TxTech - 60,862/56,340 - 93% capacity
7. ISU - 54,800/56,519 - 91.8% capacity
8. WVU - 60,000/54,826 - 91.3% capacity
9. UT - 100,119/90,035 - 89.9% capacity
10. Kansas - 50,071/27,282 - 54.4% capacity

I'm the "OP" so give me some slack, please. My point is we have "fickle" fans but why should that be? We are Mountaineers and we overcome adversity. We should unite behind our teams in thick or thin, hell or high water. We are no longer in the Big East and I expected our transition to be a bit difficult. The teams we play now are far more preferable to what we used to face, IMO.. I didn't indicate that we were "lesser" by not being ranked by that score card... meaning mostly to incite a dialogue about fandom and a need to re-ignite it. Is that too difficult to understand? Get behind your school and relax, knowing that other things which we can't control will take care of themselves. Support what we have... not what you think we should have. It will happen!!

Ah, we're good. We just need a bandwagon year to get a few more people back on board. There are some people on here that will never be happy. Good. Who would WANT them to be happy?

I will add that what I read on here is tantamount to why we're not listed. What a bunch of schmucks... mostly.
Won't go to game if we aren't "x or o"... and the coach is blamed for losing. I'll withhold my piggy bank money from my donations... I'll wear my green proudly...! I'll sulk in my Mom's basement. Those of you who fit this description are the least proud Mountaineers and the least proud of who I count as my colleagues.
Pretty much a worthless list to start.

Why do you torture yourself geek? WVU is not on the same level as the schools you are so jealous of. You need help partner. You should start by going out on a date. Get out of the house a little.
