Tennis Drops Match to No. 32 Texas
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 29, 2015) - The West Virginia University women's tennis team dropped its match to No. 32 Texas, 4-0, at Ridgeview Racquet Club, on Sunday morning.
"I thought Texas played very well in doubles today. They came out aggressive and with a lot of energy," said second-year coach Miha Lisac. "It took us all the way into singles play to match that energy. They continued to play solid, and we were not able to climb all the way back into the match."
The Mountaineers (9-8, 0-5 Big 12) fell behind early, when junior Hailey Barrett and freshman Carolina Lewis dropped a 6-1 decision on court one to Texas' Breaunna Addison and Lina Padegimaite. On court two, senior Ikttesh Chahal and freshman Habiba Shaker suffered a 6-1 setback to Texas' Ryann Foster and Danielle Wagland to give the Longhorns a one-point match advantage.
In singles action, the Longhorns (7-8, 4-2 Big 12) tallied three straight victories at the No. 4, No. 2 and No. 1 slots to secure the win over the Mountaineers.
Shaker fell to Texas' Danielle Wagland in straight sets at the No. 4 slot (6-3, 6-4). At No. 2 singles, Barrett dropped her match against Texas' Ryann Foster with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
The match-clinching point came at the No. 1 position, where sophomore Kaja Mrgole stumbled against Texas' No. 47 Breaunna Addison in straight sets at the No. 1 slot (7-5, 6-1). Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were halted after the fourth match point was won.
The Mountaineers are idle until the team travels to Texas for a pair of Big 12 matches against Texas Tech on Friday, April 10th at 3 p.m., and TCU on Sunday, April 12th at 2 p.m.
