What do you know about a small town by the name of Morganton, NC?

I'm checking out retirement places, even though I have a few years left here at the grind.

Would love Asheville, but figure that's high rent, and don't want to spend a nice portion of my retirement on a house. Beer is a necessity, and I know NC is doing well in the craft industry.

Catawba Brewing and Howard Brewing both put out some nice beers. Catawba has won a couple of GABF medals. Lake James is just east of Morganton as is Linville Gorge. It is off the mountain so it is not as cool in the summer as Asheville. It would put you about 40 minute from Asheville and a hour and 20 min from Charlotte. I do a lot of school work in Morganton. Definitely cheaper than Asheville. Waynesville has more elevation and breweries and would be another option. Plenty of golf course in the area.

Having a brewpub close by is #1. Golf course by the brewpub would be heaven. I told the wife, if I hit the lottery, I'm buying my own course, and setting up a brewery on site. She can choose to come along or not. There's another town in Tennessee I've been looking at, Maryville. Looks like a great place, but the only brewery is Smoky Mountain, which is a small chain restaurant, and those truly aren't brewpubs. I only like the brewpubs with open fire pizza, and smoked pork. Plus, have to have many beers to choose from, across the spectrum. Blondes and stouts for the wife, and everything for me.
