Last year Skylar Howard had the lowest completion percentage of all Big 12 QBs at just under 55%. On Saturday he completed just under 66% of his passes.

He still made a few passes on Saturday that made me cringe. But If he can continue to complete over 60% of his passes AND avoid foolish interceptions our offense is going to be just fine.

Hopefully Skylar won't have to play much against Youngstown St. so that Crest and Chugs can get some game time under their belts. Lawd knows they need it.

In the first quarter Skyler was the 2015 Skyler, missing his receivers on short and intermediate passes. From the 2nd quarter on he was finding the open receivers regularly. I would say his performance was adequate, but it was against Missouri, known for its defense, so Skyler may be better than adequate against other teams.

What impressed me more about WVU was the offensive line getting almost 500 yards against Missouri. That rarely happens. And Missouri's #1 superstar defender had TWO tackles, even though, when our starter went down, he was being blocked by a redshirt freshman! Think about that for a moment. A redshirt freshman kept a superstar defender from doing much damage at all. That had to help Skyler.

I thought Skyler did an excellent job of feeling the pressure, taking a step or two away from it, thus buying time before passing. That is of tremendous value.

As for Tony Gibson's rebuilt defense: The guy is a genius! He lost 6 to the NFL, 4 in the draft, and still held Missouri to 3 points (the TD came with the Missouri ones against the WVU twos).

WVU isn't top 10 caliber ... yet. But the Mountaineers are worthy for consideration at the bottom of the top 25, particularly with all the carnage that hit the top 25 teams in week one.

I came away from Mountaineer Field feeling good about my alma mater's team. Not giddy .... not yet. If WVU is 3-0 by dominating the way it did against Missouri, or better, then we can consider dancing in the streets with joy.

I give WVU a "B" for its opening game. In 2015, WVU got a "C-," so that's a major improvement. But it's only one game. We all remember a 5-0 WVU team that was the toast of America but finished 7-6. That's college football: Unpredictable.

Just ask Tennessee, Notre Dame, UCLA, LSU, Clemson, TCU, Florida. And it's only been ONE week! God, I love college football.
