MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (August 28, 2023) The West Virginia University men’s soccer team scored twice in the second half to defeat Bucknell, 2-0, Monday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 2-0 on the young season while the Bison drop their first game to fall to 1-1.

Sophomore Marcus Caldeira collected his third goal of the season in just the two games while senior Yutaro Tsukada tallied his first goal of 2023 while assisting on the first goal of the match. Junior Frederik Jorgensen and fifth year Thomas Decottignies also picked up assists on the night.

Senior Jackson Lee only had to make one save in net to secure his second shutout of the season.

The Mountaineers outshot Bucknell, 16-3, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. WVU also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

West Virginia had a couple of chances in the first half with the closest being a shot off the crossbar by Caldeira in the 39th minute, but the match remained scoreless heading into the break.

In the 54th minute, Caldeira had one of his easiest goals to put the Mountaineers in front. Out wide, Jorgensen sent the ball into the box where the goalie dove to try to corral it but could only get a fingertip on it, leaving Caldeira on the other side to knock the ball into the wide-open net.

As simple as Caldeira’s goal was, Tsukada’s goal in the 74th minute was just the opposite as he superman dove into the box to head in a ball off a cross from Decottignies. It was his first goal of the season and the second of his WVU career.

West Virginia is unbeaten at home in its last seven matches dating back to a 2-1 loss to Yale last September. The Mountaineers will look for payback against the Bulldogs on their home turf as WVU hits the road for the first time this season. Friday’s kickoff from New Haven is set for 7 p.m.
