Want to talk about robbing establishments while in WVU sweats?

I went to a Nike OZ, it's weighted on the toe and heel. It made a significant difference in my putting.

A District toddler, suffering from a fractured skull and multiple injuries, was listed in critical condition in the hospital yesterday as police announced that they had charged an acquaintance of the girl's mother with assaulting the child.

During a news conference, police said that Bobby Vernon Addison, 24, of the unit block of 46th Street NE had been charged with first-degree child sexual abuse of the year-old girl. He will be arraigned tomorrow.

The victim suffered skull fractures and multiple injuries on Friday and remained in critical but stable condition at an area hospital, police said.

Twelve detectives working in several teams investigated the case for nearly 24 hours to make an arrest, a reflection of their outrage over the crime, said Lt. Guy Middleton of the Violent Crimes Branch.

"It's a baby," Middleton said. "No one wants to see a baby assaulted."

About 11 a.m. Friday, police arrived at a house in the 4600 block of Central Avenue NE in response to a call about an assault. An individual, whom police did not identify, had arrived at the house and found the injured toddler, who had been under Addison's care that day.

Middleton said detectives questioned Addison at the house and learned that he was baby-sitting the child while her mother was at work and that he was the only person alone with the child. At that time, detectives had not been informed by the hospital that the child had been sexually assaulted, Middleton said.

Addison went with detectives for further questioning and remained at the police station until 2 a.m. yesterday, Middleton said. Meanwhile, other detectives canvassed the neighborhood and talked to relatives and people acquainted with Addison and the child's mother.

Based on Addison's comments to police and evidence collected, police secured a warrant and arrested Addison at 10 a.m. yesterday at his home, Middleton said.

An investigator from the Child and Family Services Agency, the city department that investigates cases of child neglect and abuse, also responded to the incident Friday after being contacted by police, who are required to report child abuse cases to the agency.

Child Services spokeswoman Mindy Good said that the agency had had no prior contact with the family and that it is investigating the police report.

Good said this victim is younger than any child in a sexual abuse case investigated by the agency in the past three years.

"We see this very infrequently [in the city], but when it happens, it's gut-wrenching," she said.
