Hey everyone,

Ryan Snyder again. I cover Maryland and Penn State for Rivals.com.

I was able to touch base with Michael Ferns, father of 2016 LB Brendan Ferns this evening.

We spoke about the West Virginia visit last week and, as expected, it went well. It was basically all about academics, which is what I was expecting. He's met with the WVU staff multiple times and, as you all know, his brother plays there now, so the only thing he really needed to learn about was petroleum engineering program. Again, all of that went well.

Brendan also decided to put the Texas A&M visit to the side for now. He decided to go to the beach with a friend later in the week instead. He may still take that visit, but I've gotten the impression that getting mom to Penn State - which will be her first time at PSU - is the most important thing at the moment.

He needs to get to PSU before July 1, or that visit will have to wait another two weeks until all the coaches return from vacation. I forget the exact days, but I believe the dead period this summer is something like July 1-14. If not it's like June 30 - July 13, something like that.

As soon as I get a set date from the Ferns family, I'll pass it on. I do still believe this is will come down to West Virginia and Penn State. The family is also getting a bit antsy. Originally, they were OK with taking their time this summer, but our talk tonight gave me the impression that they want to wrap this up sooner than later.

Finally, I do still believe that PSU has a slight edge. I'll stress that both Brendan and his father keep all of that info to themselves. They're open about everything but putting schools in an order, so I'll stress that's just my opinion.

I do cover PSU, but I'm the furthest thing from a homer. haha. I understand there's a lot of that throughout the Rivals network, but I do believe I'm one of the more neutral reporters on this network.

They just really stressed to me tonight that they want to get this over with sooner than later. That gave me the vibe that, if WVU was the leader at the moment, he would've committed during that visit or shortly after.

But again, I do believe that, if PSU is the leader, it's not by a large margin. Neither would really surprise me. Both schools are excellent with his major. I just believe PSU has a slight edge, but again, only time will really tell.

Just wanted to pass that all on. I was actually just in Morgantown a couple weeks ago for my sisters graduation. I had to move her into her new house for grad school too, so there is plenty of West Virginia love in the Snyder household. haha. I just honestly believe that PSU has a slight edge still, but I've been wrong before, so we'll see.

Take care everyone.
