WVU (22-12, 6-3 Big 12) is 110-93 all-time against Pitt. Of note, the Panthers are West Virginia’s most-played opponent in program history.

The two schools have already met once this season. UP took down the Mountaineers, 9-6, on March 30, at Cost Field in Pittsburgh.

Wednesday’s game marks the fourth time WVU will play at PNC Park since 2017. The squad is 3-0 at the big-league venue.

Last time out, the Mountaineers dropped a series against then-No. 3 Oklahoma State from April 15-17, at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown. WVU fell in the series opener, 2-1, bounced back for a 5-2 victory in the middle game and lost, 13-3, in the series finale.

Sophomore infielder Nathan Blasick hit a pair of home runs against the Cowboys, while sophomore catcher McGwire Holbrook had four RBI in April 16’s win. Additionally, sophomore left-handed pitcher Ben Hampton recorded his Big 12-leading sixth victory in the middle game.

The Mountaineers have stolen 115 bases this season, the most in single-season program history. The squad entered the week ranked No. 2 nationally in the category.

Individually, junior outfielder Victor Scott II has a team-leading 30 stolen bases, which sits at No. 1 in WVU’s single-season record book. The Powder Springs, Georgia, native also is No. 2 in the nation in the category.

West Virginia received votes in multiple polls this week. The club also checked in at No. 28 in the latest College Baseball Newspaper’s top-30 poll.

Now in his 10th season at the helm, WVU coach Randy Mazey has posted a 285-220 record with the Mountaineers. West Virginia is 11-5 against Pitt in the Mazey era.

Pitt is led by fourth-year coach Mike Bell, who has the Panthers out to a 21-13 record this spring. UP also is 9-8 in ACC play and coming off a series win over then-No. 5 Virginia, 2-1, last weekend.

Pitt has won 11 of its last 14 games heading into Wednesday’s matchup.

Tatem Levins leads the Panthers in a variety of offensive categories, including average (.333), home runs (11) and RBI (34). Additionally, Sky Duff has a current reached-base streak of 55 games.

As a team, UP has hit 57 homers as a team so far this season, good for No. 17 in the nation.
