MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Shane Lyons, in conjunction with the Atlantic Coast Conference, has announced that WVU's 2022 road games at Pitt and Virginia Tech will be moved to Thursday night.

The season opener at Pitt, originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3, will be moved to Thursday, Sept. 1 and game four at Virginia Tech, originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, will be moved to Thursday, Sept. 22.

The national television network for the two primetime matchups will be announced at a later date.

"Moving two of our oldest football rivalries to primetime continues to build excitement for the 2022 season," Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. "Fans will get to start the Labor Day Weekend with the Backyard Brawl, which is a great way to renew one of the best rivalries in college football. And if heading to Blacksburg for the first time since 2004 wasn't hard enough, changing it to a Thursday night matchup will showcase the rivalry even more to college football fans around the country."

Along with the Baylor game in Morgantown on Thursday, Oct. 13, there now will be three Thursday games on this year's schedule. That marks the most games on a weekday since 2011 when the Mountaineers faced Syracuse and Pitt on Friday and finished the regular season at USF on a Thursday.

Since the 2011 season, WVU has played two weekday games in 2018 and 2019. Single weekday games were played during the 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019 seasons.

During the early 2000s, The Mountaineers could be seen on weekday games quite often, playing three times during the 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 and four games in 2006, 2009 and 2010.

Season ticket holders from the 2021 season will receive renewal information later this spring. WVU has six home games in 2022 including matchups with Oklahoma, Baylor, K-State and TCU.

Is this because the ACC became the new Thursday night b***h after the BE dissolved? One of the better things since joining the Big 12 is WVU has had to play far less games outside of Saturday. Thursday night may make it difficult for road warrior Mountaineer fans.

ACC lives for Thursday and Friday games.

Week one includes a Sunday night and Monday night game, and there are more than 10 more games currently scheduled for Thursday or Friday.

ACC remains the only conference to play games five consecutive days (Thursday- Monday) in week one

I prefer Saturday games but of course I’ll watch regardless.
