I come in peace to talk about the Backyard Brawl!

With it being rivalry week, it sure does suck that the Backyard Brawl won't be played this weekend, or at all this year or several years to come!
I always loved the Brawl, and WVU is absolutely Pitts biggest and most traditional rival!
A lot of Pitt fans are excited for the PSU series, but most of their fans couldn't care less!
The Backyard Brawl over the years has been one of the best rivalries in the country, and I can't wait until it's played every year again!!

Have a safe, and happy Thanksgiving!

Outside chance the Backyard Brawl could be played this year in the Russell Athletic Bowl. The bowl committee certainly wants it.

Highly unlikely because of the ND factor: Notre Dame is eligible for any ACC bowl tie-in as long as it’s within one game of the team eligible for the slot. However, if ACC is in the playoff, Notre Dame can’t take the Orange Bowl spot.

Clemson will get the Orange Bowl as one of the playoff teams, which means that ND, being the higher ranked eligible team, which also assume they finish top 8, will be next in line as neither UNC or FSU will be ranked higher. The ND Factor(Chick-Fila) pushes every ACC team down in the pecking order, which means UNC probably gets the Russell Athletic slot, FSU get the Sun Bowl which means Pitt would actually be the 5th team (4th in standings) in the selection order in the ACC based on final standings and any poll ranking. I think that is the Belk Bowl in Charlotte.

I've loved the Brawl through the years. But at this point I don't care if we ever play Pitt again. I'd be happy to play MD, PSU, Rutgers, and/or VaTech. But Pitt? Let 'em have their empty seats.
Maryland???? Rutgers?????? I am speechless. Well almost....

I don't know where we get some of our fans. WVU-Pitt is/was one of the greatest rivals in all of college football. EVERYBODY knows who the backyard brawl involves. There is a reason it was played on Thanksgiving weekend, usually with a prime time slot. Lot's of hype and attendance (even if it was mosty WVU fans at either venue). Now we get noon games vs Iowa State. Great...

EAT SHIT PITT!!!!!

Yep, tired of helping them sellout at least one home game a year.

Bring on VT. That's the series I'm interested in restarting.
Well we haven't been exactly packing them in either. I solid sell out is ensured with pitt in town. And if we can beat their azz in Pixburgh every once in awhile I don't mind them putting a couple coins in their pocket. Their AD is going bankrupt anyway, with or without WVU. It is so bad that they are the only P5 team to not publish their AD finances. The fact that virtually all ACC teams are losing $$ is compelling.

Gotcha! Still not interested. Basketball school now and drowning in their own red ink.

glad we don't have to put up with that Notre Dame parasite anymore.

Pitt and Penn State was also a great rivalry at one point and no one except Pitt fans miss it at all. WVU-Pitt games had a lot of regional interest but not a lot nationally. People watched because there was little else on at that time. All that has changed and there are other options (games) now on Thanksgiving weekend.

I'll take the noon games against ISU along with all the top 20 conference teams that we now play during the regular season, the national exposure we get all year long, conference money, Bowl schedule, playoff opportunities, etc., etc.

Pitt was attempting to replace WVU with PSU as their main rivalry game until Penn State rejected any thought of an extension to the current contract ( which was established by two A.D.s who were friends and now no longer employed at either University ). I could care less about the backyard brawl.

I'm sure you are glad to drive the 8 hours to your closest away conference game rather than the 11/2 hour drive to the Burg. ESPN rated the PITT WVU rivalry as the 11th best in the country, but we all know ESPN knows nothing of college football, especially when compared to the WVU xperts. By the way neither team has a rivalry game now no matter what the fans think or say.

i actually don't hate pitt. i feel sorry for them more than anything. they used to have a pretty decent program. now it is a shadow of its former self.

No offense, but I'll be honest I don't miss the brawl at all. it really lost it's cachet after the 80s. In the 90s they moved out of pitt stadium. It became too corporate.

I've always thought of Maryland and VPI as the main rivals for WVU. I've hated losing them off the schedule. Maryland more than VPI cause of the border and WVU has always been thought of as their main rival.

No offense but having to take a boat ride to go to Heinz makes tailgating impossible & kills the college feel worse.. Plus pitt never brought any fans to mountaineer field. It only seemed to benefit the city of Pittsburgh.

Idk

Happy thanksgiving to you. Enjoy the acc.

Almost speechless again. ESPN played it in prime time on a prime day because...... nobody watched it?......ok.

This has NOTHING to do with conference affiliation. A regional game (remember: we have none in our conference) against a team we actually recruit against.

This game will sell out at both stadiums,,,,something we do inconsistantly lately. Nobody is getting stoked for TT, KSU, & ISU.
Even the marquis games have available seats.

The whole PSU,WVU, & pitt won't play each other thing was due to JoePa and Steve Pederson. As soon as they were gone the schedules opened up. We will be playing pitt & psu on a regular basis some day.....or we could add USF or UCF to our schedule......great.

It WAS a game to look forward to every year....the Brawl....and it should be played. It was one game I went to every season whether it was in my backyard or in morgantown. Some of us have family members who went to Pitt and we have a lot who went to WVU so its a generational thing too. I think we all have to remember that its being renewed when some of us are doddering old fellers..and ONLY happenned because Penn "snakes" wouldn't agree to a long term deal with Pitt. That's Fine.
I'm more interested in VT....and I LOVE the Big 12. Remember pttties love that passive aggression....and they are masters of the backhanded compliment. At least the one's that visit this board anyway. Remeber how they "showed us" by scheduling the Moo' ers? think they might regret that.

Also a Pitt fan. I grew up hating Penn State more and always wanted that rivalry back. When wvu wasn't playing Pitt I actually rooted for them since we were in the same conference. Now that the PSU rivalry is almost back I find myself tired of their false arrogance and I'd just rather be done with them. Give me the Backyard brawl!

Sorry you feel that way man...
I'm not trying to be an A-hole or anything. I just miss the Brawl! I miss having a true rivalry game at the end of the season.

The BYB is a past memory...I don't miss it...I don't care that we don't have a close rival...moving the BYB to TG took away from the students as most were gone for the holiday...the stadium wasn't packed and rocking like it was for LSU!!...I like the Big 12 as every conference game means something!

The TV ratings were so so, and I doubt that one game had a lot to do with recruiting. Paterno is dead and Pederson was fired. We have a few games scheduled in the distant future, but I wouldn't characterize them as being played on a regular basis.

Even if WVU brought 25,000 fans to Heinz Field, the place would be nowhere near an actual sell out. Without conference and bowl implications along with a Pitt program that hasn't been relevant on a national level for decades, the series that most people remember doesn't exist any longer and likely never will again. I would much rather play Maryland on a "regular basis" than Pitt.

There are reasons that WVU and Pitt don't play every year - figure it out.

I did already. Perserson, Joe Pa, and the fact that we are in different conferences. It has NOTHING to do with disinterest.

Punk, you are a voice of reason on an island of hate. PITT WVU and Ped state should play every year, but because of conference affiliations this is all but impossible. The main reason is every program has to schedule a few patsies to make sure of bowl eligibility.

Sorry but the thought of playing pitt now makes me want a nap. Yawn

Don't be sorry...everyone has their opinion.
Im not sure why there doesn't seem to be more interest here? I know most mountaineer fans I have talked to desperately want the rivalry back as much as I do! They also see Pitt as their main rival...I think that one should be clearly obvious.

I know right. The fact that one poster favored Rutgers or Maryland over you guys is sad...one more CFB tradition down the drain.

Maybe one day we will have a rival.......maybe.

I miss the Backyard Brawl. Only thing better than playing a Big12 schedule would be having Pitt as an OOC game. I'm sorry if some people don't care but WVU vs Pitt is part of WVU's history and I would much rather play them than Maryland.

The last 2 times Pitt came to Morgantown they brought about 500 fans. They're fans quit the rivalry b4 it came off the schedule.

There is so much interest in this series that they are going to wait another 7 years before starting it and the series is only for 4 years.

The real reason the backyard brawl was even renewed is because Pitt couldn't convince Penn State to extend their series.
