My son is a rising senior at Middletown High School here in Delaware. Several of his teammates hold WV offers (Dorian Rutledge, Amare Glover, Tysir Young), and several others holding Power 4 offers from many other schools. Talent wise, my son is very good (1st team all state LB (he's also a long snapper), D1 (highest level in DE) District 1 Defensive Player of the Year, over 400 career tackles). However, he's slightly undersized for a D1 linebacker (6'0 210), so he's flown slightly under the radar in comparison to these other players on his team who have the physical measurables in terms of height. He's had interest from several D1 schools, Nebraska, Lafayette, Towson, Maine, Nova, Eastern Michigan and some D2s including a Jr. Day visit to Sheperd last weekend ... but no D1 offers.
Anyhow, that 1st D1 offer is always the hardest to get and has eluded him. So apparently, the recruiting period opened back up this week where coaches can visit schools. He texted my yesterday and told me that DeSean Jackson and the other Delaware State Coaches were going to his school to watch the team lift. Later he told me that DeSean wanted him to stay after the lift to do some on field work for him. So after the lift, they put him through some work outs and when they were done, DeSean went over to him and said, "after what I just saw, I would be crazy to not offer you a scholarship right now."
Unless you've been through the recruiting process, you don't understand what that first D1 scholarship offer means. It essentially legitimizes you as a D1 prospect in the eyes of other schools and sometimes, it's the hardest offer to get. So I'm hoping more offers will come and hopefully a P4 (he's going for a Nebraska visit and camp in June). It also means, as an older dad (and he's my youngest), I can retire here in a year or two instead of 6 years down the road when he finishes college.
