got a question for anyone who has had a similar experience.

Ok

I got DirecTV almost 2 years back. First year paid like $52 a month
Second year paid $102 a month after being told initially 2nd year would be $75 a month. That is a lie on DirecTVs part.

Ok now I'm seeing that Dish has a 3 year locked in price of about $75 given same # of receivers and similar channels with only requiring a 2 year contract.

So I call up DirecTV and tell them I will be leaving cause of Dish being cheaper. DirecTV comes back with an offer of like $71 and it's only a 12 month agreement.

Ok given the history of DirecTV with the year 1 vs year 2 price, has anyone else ever done anything like this with a 1 year extension after the initial contract is up?
If so is there fine print in this extension that makes it longer than 1 year?

Also for the dish folks, do you have good experiences there?

I don't want to jump from a bad to a worse situation.

Thanks

I've had Dish for about 5 years and love it. Very rarely lose signal. If WVU is on tv, it's on one of my channels.

The cable and satellite companies are hurting. I am on Dish, and I ask for a reduction in rate every year when they raise my rates back up.

To me you have to look at 2 things

1. Dish is giving you a three year contract. Is it worth the change not to deal with this every year DirectTV raises your rates back to the current amount.

2. Which service is better provider. This is a matter of preference and others will disagree with me, but I have had Dish and DirectTV and Dish is a superior service

Get rid of both and get Sling for $20 a month. Unless you watch a ton of tv, you're wasting money with any TV package.

Thanks for the replies.

I have more than 2 weeks to decide what to do. I'm going to weigh my options and see. Still a little Leary about trusting directv. They do lie or did to me.

Heck................Sling TV only offers about 25 stations. OK..............25 stations is adequate if you could pick and choose. The Dish and Direct TV offers over 250 stations but the average person only watches about 10 to 15 out of the 250. Do you watch Judge Judy and Dr. Phil?

Don't be knocking Dr Phil. That's quality TV. If you don't like it, "YOU HAVE A PROBLEM!!!", so "put your big boy pants on, start acting like a big boy" and say "let's do it!" Or "you can put feathers on a dog but that don't make it a kitty cat."

Basic Sling package includs ESPN/ESPN2 and access to the WatchESPN app. You can also upgrade to a better sports package for a few extra bucks to include ESPN News/ESPN U and a couple other affiliates of ESPN.

Once college basketball season is over, I'll turn-off the added sport package and then add it back on once college football starts.

The rest of the package is Disney, CNN, TBS, TNT, Food, Travel, History, H2, AMC, Cartoon Network and others. I don't watch much TV so I can understand how someone would pay $100+ for a cable package.

Every time our rates jump up we call and say we have a better offer from Comcast. They always lower the rate and throw in something free. Last time the wife called and we got the Genie receivers for two rooms for free. I also got the Sunday Ticket for free three straight seasons. If the person you talk to isn't helpful ask to speak to a cancellation manager. DTV does not want to lose subscribers.

You are who I'm looking to really talk to.

So basically the 12 month extension is in fact REALLY just a 12 month extension at a lower price ($30) and a perk (NFL Sunday ticket, etc) to where at the end of it when they want to up your rate again, you can say "I'm leaving for (fill in the blank) to get another 12 months out of them?
And then I guess you do it again?

That second year of the 1st contract they really screw you good, and I've heard if you upgrade during anytime in the 1st contract with more receivers or channels , they actually will start the time over. I didn't change my options at all, so my first contract is up soon.

Warez... competition brings improvement or panic... sometimes both can be good for the consumer. It won't be long before all the providers go to an ala carte system, only pay for what you use. Base monthly fee and then more or less pay per view on the other channels.

Bottom line is they DO NOT want to lose subscribers. If you call and get someone who is not helpful hang up and call back. Some reps are more cooperative than others. We've done this several times ad always got a lower rate and something for free(i.e. free HBO or Showtime for six months or free Genie).

lov directTV...

i combined some of my Verizon Phone tab for a discount. ..

DirectTV always grants discounts...
just got to call....

Call Direct TV and tell them you want to cancel your service at the end of your current contract. Refer to specific offers from Dish, and any available cable providers. The initial person you contact will transfer you to the customer loyalty department and they will offer a significant discount on the current proposed price. It's a pain in the butt, but it works.

My folks have DirecTV and have always enjoyed it, but I likely will never go that route because I don't like the prospect of a perpetual "oh I'm cancelling because you're going to jack up my rate" process every year. It's nice if you watch a LOT of TV, but most of what I watch is available on streaming services the day after it airs. Given my wife works nights now, I usually wait to watch with her.

I hate Suddenlink with a passion. Their service isn't that great. They cut all Viacom channels (of which I only watched Comedy Central - but they lost a lot of what made me want to watch). Their customer service calls at the most random times. In fact, last week I had just laid down for a nap after work and my phone is blaring a call from a random number. We'd just closed on our house so I thought it was a bank or something. Nope. Suddenlink. "This is Suddenlink and we see you have TV and internet with us..." I cut the lady off and said "And I won't for much longer if you all keep calling me with dumb shit." I'm paying $120 for their 100MB internet service and standard HDTV plus HBO and Cinemax. They cap their data for internet at 450GB for their max service. So they've built in a safeguard against those who stream a lot. F*** Suddenlink and I hope Comcast buys them out, because even though Comcast is the Evil Empire, I never had a quarrel with their service or face-to-face customer service.

In summation, I will go to Sling once networks and a few more packages are added.

To give an update on this one.

I ended up renewing for ONLY 12 months with Directv. Basically a 12 month contract extension. Called them up twice.

First call to them they offered to knock $30 off a month for a 12 month extension to the contract. I said I'll consider it. They come back with "this offer may not be good next time you call" (sales pressure, yeah AS IF).

I call back bout 2 weeks later which was tonight. Got a better deal. Keep in mind, my original contract expires 2-21-16.

This evening when calling Directv agreed to knock $30 a month for the 12 months + another $10 a month for 10 months + 3 free months of HBO, MAX, & Showtime. Oh and I still get $10 extra per month for the person I have signed up. I tried to get NFL Sunday ticket, but they wouldn't do it. The counter offer was the 3 months of HBO, MAX, & Showtime.

My package is the XTRA package which is what I've always had.

The 4 letter word for anybody else in a similar situation that you have to say is DISH. Tell them you're going to DiSH cause it's cheaper. Knocking basically $40 a month off was better than I expected, and I don't have to have any contractors in my house from dish to put their system in. No offense but these contractors and worse SUBcontractors that I have seen (from DirecTV) ain't making me feel comfortable having them in my house. And it ain just cause they didn't take their shoes off.

I got it on my calandar for 2017 to do the same thing ie renegotiation.

Just what I did. Good luck to anyone else.

If I could get all WVU football and b-ball with reliable high quality without cable/satellite, I'd cut the cord. I hardly watch any TV other than sports and I don't need all the sports channels

I may be forgetting one even, but just to get all WVU stuff t means:

ESPN. ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPNN (for the beginning of some games; watchESPN works but is not good enough quality where I live)

Fox, FS1 (FS2?-- not sure if we've been on that)

The broadcast networks (not a problem can get those with an antenna).

ROOT (it may only have "lesser" games but I need them all and I don't think even a low quality stream is available)
