As usual, openers come up with more surprises than any other week because nearly every team encounters glitches. Improvement from game 1 to game 2 usually is the biggest leap for most teams.

That said, #6 Washington, the price of the Pac-12, lost to #9 Auburn, 21-16. Plenty of time for Washington to build its resume by playoff time, but this one didn’t leave the Huskies much leeway for error the rest of the year.

Even more hurtful, Penn State had to go into overtime to beat the Mountaineers, and it wasn’t the team with Will Grier but Appalachian State. Appy State is not a team you want to play in the opener even though it’s a payday game for the Mountaineers far south of Morgantown.

#11 Michigan State only beat Utah State, 38-31. Not exactly a feather in Sparty’s cap.

Good to see Oklahoma blow away Florida Atlantic, 63-14; TCU whip Southern, 55-7; West Virginia to topple Tennessee, 40-14; and Oklahoma State to trample Missouri State, 58-17.

But NOT good to see #23 Texas lose to Maryland, 34-29, after taking a 29-24 lead after 3 quarters.

Gibby has some serious work to do with the defense. The numbers against the Vols look better than the eyeball test. I don’t know what happened to USC transfer nose tackle Bigelow after the first quarter. I’m hoping someone explains that disappearance.

As always people are attempting to place limitations and expectations on teams after one week.

You can't judge teams until they play a few games.
The 2017 Rose Bowl is a perfect example.
Both USC and Penn State sucked to start the season.
By January they were 2 of the Top 5 teams.

Couldn't agree more. You can't predict a season from the opening game. Grier was superb, first QB to ever throw 5 TD passes against any Tennessee team. Defense needs more work, but had an outstanding 1st half. Overall, a fun day for my alma mater and me.

But Texas blows so what’s your point?
