From my Section 105 seat in Mountaineer Field, these observations before checking my DVR recording of the game:
Defensive coordinator Tony Gibson has done an excellent job of rebuilding a defense that mostly is gone from 2015, with 6 in the NFL. Deep coverage in the first half was inadequate, but improved substantionally in the second half, with defenders going for the ball more.
William Crest came in at QB long enough to fumble inside WVU’s 10. Chubs played much more, might be QB of the future, but both showed that WVU better hope that Skyler Howard stays healthy.
Missouri’s ones scored only TD against WVU’s twos late in the game.
It was pretty damn hot on the field and the heavier Missouri players wilted as the game went on.
Overall, a respectable opening game on a weekend when one-third of the top 25 either lost or were unimpressive. Those other Mountaineers, Appalachian State, did every but beat Tennessee and took the Vols to overtime.
Oklahoma’s loss to Houston harms the Big 12 image if the Sooners win the Big 12 title, virtually eliminating a Big 12 team in the playoffs. But the audition gave Houston a leg up on becoming a Big 12 member. Obviously, Houston can hang with Big 12 teams.
LSU and UCLA also went down.
So, WVU is 1-0 and ahead of one-third the top 25 teams. Maybe the Mountaineers will get some attention, but not a lot, in the top 25 voting.
