No. 3/4 Mountaineers Set for Big 12 Road Trip
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 8, 2015) – The No. 3/4 West Virginia University women’s soccer team hits the road this weekend for a pair of Big 12 Conference matches.
The Mountaineers (11-1, 2-0) will travel to Norman, Oklahoma, for match against Oklahoma (8-4-1, 1-0-1) on Friday, Oct. 9. First kick from John Crain Field at the OU Soccer Complex is set for 8 p.m. ET. The match will be carried live on FOX College Sports Atlantic, FOX Sports Oklahoma and FOX Sports Southwest Plus, with Chad McKee on the call and Carrie Whigham adding color. The contest also will be available on the FOX Sports Go app.
WVU will then travel to Lubbock, Texas, for a showdown with No. 16/13 Texas Tech (7-1-4, 0-0-2) on Sunday, Oct. 11. First kick from the John Walker Soccer Complex is set for 2 p.m. ET.
The Mountaineers enter the weekend riding a 10-match win streak. The squad needs four more wins to match the program record set in 2010. WVU is tied for No. 1 nationally in wins (11) and shutouts (10).
“These are two huge games with two good opponents who we know are going to cause all sorts of problems,” said Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “OU is better than its record, and I know Friday is going to be a big, tough game for us.”
The Mountaineers have not allowed a goal in a Big 12 Conference road match since a 2-0 loss at TTU on Oct. 27, 2013. WVU is 23-1-2 all-time in Big 12 regular-season matches.
WVU ranks No. 2 nationally, No. 1 in the Big 12, with a 0.248 goals-against average (GAA). The team also ranks No. 13 nationally, No. 1 in the Big 12, in goals-per-game (2.50) and points-per-game (7.33) averages.
Senior Hannah Steadman is credited with seven of the team’s shutouts this season and ranks No. 2 nationally, No. 1 in the Big 12, with a 0.281 GAA. Classmate Kailey Utley paces the team with 18 points (6 G, 6 A) and ranks No. 2 in the Big 12. Sophomore forward Michaela Abam owns a team-best eight goals, matching her team-best output from 2014, and ranks No. 2 in the Big 12.
The Mountaineers are 4-0 all-time against OU. The squads met twice last year, with WVU earning a 3-1 win in Morgantown on Oct. 26, and a 1-0 victory in the Big 12 Soccer Championship final on Nov. 9, in Kansas City, Missouri. All-Big 12 honoree Kate Schwindel netted the game-winner in the 13th minute off a pass from senior midfielder Amanda Hill. Steadman matched her career high with six saves.
WVU secured its second Big 12 Conference regular-season title in its last trip to Norman, earning a 2-1 double-overtime victory on Oct. 26, 2013. Down 1-0, Frances Silva scored the equalizer in the 80th minute, and Kate Schwindel netted the game-winner in the 102nd minute off a Silva pass.
The Sooners concluded their nonconference slate with a 1-0 win at Illinois State on Oct. 2. Freshman forward Kaylee Dao, the reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Week, tallied her third game-winner of the season in the 64th minute.
OU shows six clean sheets on the season and a 0.84 GAA. Junior Kassidie Stade is 6-4-1 on the season with 33 saves. The Sooners have tallied 27 goals, with Dao and sophomore Chelsea Jackson pacing with four goals each.
WVU is 2-1 all-time against the Red Raiders. In their last meeting, the Mountaineers earned a resounding 4-2 victory against then-No. 15 TTU on Oct. 10, 2014, in Morgantown. WVU connected on four of its five shots on-goal, with Cari Price netting the game-winner in the 60th minute. Steadman made one save.
The Mountaineers’ 2-0 loss in Lubbock in 2013 is the squad’s lone defeat in Big 12 regular-season play.
TTU most recently drew Oklahoma State, 2-2, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Oct. 2, with both goals coming from senior forward Janine Beckie, the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Junior Lauren Watson made nine saves.
Beckie leads the Red Raiders and ranks No. 4 in the Big 12 with 13 points (5 G, 3 A). Watson ranks No. 3 in the conference with a 0.62 GAA.
