This is a situation I talked about a lot. You have two things going on. First of all the players that were already here are going to start asking, 'what about us'.
The second is playing time. These young guys haven't figured out yet that this is no different than when they were originally recruits in terms of playing time. Sure you can keep transferring and trying to find a place where you get more minutes but is that really all you're interested in? The current WVU team has a shot at a special season. I think they'll be some regret for those that walk away and end up on an average or less team.
And back to the first point. Everyone on the roster is going to want these high paying NIL deals. At some point, they'll have to realize that they may not be worth what another player is getting paid.
When you guys heard me talking about how WVU needed to do whatever they could with the search to keep the roster this is what I worried about. Next year this is going to be even worse and I wanted to see them get the most out of the current roster because this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity. This year WVU was able to take $2M+ and use it for these stud portal players. Next year they likely won't even have $2M and if they do they'll have to spread around more, which makes it more difficult to get the stars that you see in this class.
The last thing I'll say is the chaos during the hiring process didn't help. It's not that it took an outrageous amount of time but it wasn't handled well and there was a serious lack of communication. WVU falls back on the interim approach that they could have done from day one. Even young players can see what a mess it was. Additionally, you know other teams are going to ask these WVU players if they wants to come and play for them, for a coach with years of experience and a record of putting players in the NBA or an inexperienced interim coach at WVU. That's going to be difficult to counter.
I still think they have a great shot at keeping most of the roster but it's going to be a struggle for several days and likely weeks.
