Oklahoma beat Akron 41-3 in the season opener. That’s a 38-point margin.

Bowling Green beat Akron 59-10 in game 7, a 49-point margin.

Does that make Bowling Green 11 points better than Oklahoma? Hell, no!

Yet comparative scores are used regularly on this board to “prove” that a team is better or worse than another team.

By the way, Terry Bowden’s Zips are 3-5 for the season, but have won 3 of their last 5 games. Terry inherited a team that had one-loss seasons for three straight years, so that’s progress. Not Bobby Bowden level … yet.

No, but it doesn't change the point we are 20 points worse than Oklahoma and 24 points worse than Baylor, I do believe that's something to make ado about..

I agree. Face to face scores are indisputable. Which, I believe, was my point.

Comparative scores are meaningless, even moreso when one game is the opener and the other was halfway through the season. If WVU interspersed games with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor and TCU with games against Kansas and Iowa State the outcome would be different against the October Octopus Onslaught than when the Mountaineers have to face the top 4 teams in the Big 12 in a row.
All kinds of different things to consider. Comparative scores, not so much.
Otherwise, Virginia Tech should have been handed the national title last year because it trounced Ohio State 3 QBs ago.

M ighty defense throttled Georgia Southern, 44-0

O utstanding defense obliterated Liberty, 41-17

U nilaterally decimated Maryland, 45-6, on defense and offense

N oxious offense & special teams against Oklahoma, 44-24

T urnovers lose to Oklahoma State, 33-26 in OT despite impressive comeback from 15-point deficit.

A wesome Baylor too much, 62-38.

I nch by TCU

N ip Texas Tech

E scape Texas

E rectile dysfunction Kansas

R oll past Iowa State

S lip past Kansas State

And right now we are tied with TCU, zero to zero.
Not in the conference standings, unfortunately, which is the more pertinent issue.

Pulling one yearly upset hasn't been a big problem for Holgorsen. He beat a top 15 team each of his first 4 seasons here. I wouldn't be totally shocked to see it happen again next week.

The bad news is he hasn't done nearly well enough in all the other games to make a dent in Big 12 play, which is the return on investment we needed to see from him.

If you're a fan who is happy being a spoiler for somebody else's party once each fall, then Holgorsen might be your guy.

However, he just hasn't beaten enough rank-and-file Big 12 opponents to ever be a factor in the championship race. That's the very reason Luck hired him in the first place.

Unless Lyons has a drastically lower standard in mind, I imagine he also won't be satisfied for too much longer barring a sudden reversal of fortune.

And unlike you Lyons realizes that WVU is in a great conference and playing the best of the best. Also, he can't just get rid of someone, but will be responsible for getting someone better ( who will also be dumped on after every loss - comes with the job ). Holgorsen still must be the person who the powers to be think can continue to make WVU competitive in the Big 12. And the people without any power can continue to post on message boards attempting to sound intelligent sharing their wisdom.
