WVU Release Mountaineers Travel to Brittain Resorts Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 20, 2020) – The West Virginia University baseball team travels to the Brittain Resorts Invitational, from Feb. 21-23, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.


WVU is set to play four games in three days at the event, beginning with a matchup against Kennesaw State on Friday, Feb. 21. First pitch atTicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Park is set for 3 p.m. ET.


From there, the Mountaineers take on Saint Joseph’s on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m., before two games close the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 23. First, WVU battles Illinois at 10 a.m., at TicketReturn.comField at Pelicans Park, before traveling to nearby Conway, South Carolina, for the weekend finale at Coastal Carolina. First pitch at CCU’s Springs Brooks Stadium is slated for 4 p.m.


The Mountaineers and Chanticleers were originally scheduled to meet on Monday, Feb. 24. Due to severely cold temperatures on Friday and impending weather in the Myrtle Beach area on Monday, however, several changes were made to the event’s schedule.


Fans can follow along with the team all weekend long with help from live stats on Friday, Saturdayand Sunday morning. A live stream of WVU’s matchup against Coastal Carolina will be available, courtesy of the Chanticleer Sports Network. Live stats for that contest are available here.


WVU and Kennesaw State are set to meet for the second consecutive season on Friday. The two schools opened the 2019 campaign a year ago, with the Owls earning a 5-3 win. KSU leads the all-time series, 1-0.


The Mountaineers take on Saint Joseph’s for the 12th time on Saturday but the first since 1998. WVU holds a 7-4 advantage in the series.


WVU and Illinois meet in Myrtle Beach for the second time in three years on Sunday. Overall, the Mountaineers have played the Fighting Illini 11 times and are 3-8 in the all-time series.


West Virginia last played Coastal Carolina in 2017. In all, the two schools have met 12 times prior to Sunday, all of them in Conway. The Chanticleers lead the all-time series, 8-4, however the Mountaineers are 3-2 against CCU in the Randy Mazey era.


Junior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf takes the hill to begin the weekend on Friday against Kennesaw State. The Gahanna, Ohio, native opened the season by pitching seven shutout innings at Jacksonville on Feb. 14, allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out a career-best eight batters. He earned the win in the Mountaineers’ 3-0 victory.


For his efforts, Wolf was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17.


Wolf goes against Kennesaw State junior left-hander Ryan Kennedy (1-0, 0.00 ERA), while sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan Bergert (0-0, 1.50 ERA) battles junior righty Ryan Devine (0-0, 10.80 ERA) of Saint Joseph’s on Saturday.


Freshman left-hander Jake Carr (1-0, 1.80 ERA) gets the ball for Sunday’s opener against Illinois, while freshman left-hander Cole Kirschsieper (0-0, 2.45 ERA) goes for the Illini.


Starters for the Coastal Carolina game are TBA.


WVU (3-1) is coming off a 15-8 win over Canisius in the squad’s 2020 home opener on Feb. 18, at Monongalia County Ballpark. The Mountaineers clubbed 17 hits in the win, tallying runs in five different innings.


Freshman catcher/infielder Matt McCormick led the way with a four-hit outing, including a towering solo homer in the second inning. The Orland Park, Illinois, native finished with three RBIs on the day.


Additionally, senior outfielder/right-handed pitcher Braden Zarbnisky and sophomore infielder/outfielder Austin Davis each tallied three hits in the win, while junior infielder Tyler Doanes went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.


The Mountaineers used seven pitchers against the Golden Griffins, six of them newcomers. Freshman right-hander Tim Wynia earned the win in his collegiate debut.


Wolf enters the weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation in WHIP (0.14) and ERA (0.00), while he sits No. 36 nationally in hits per nine innings (1.29).


Freshman outfielder Victor Scott is tied for No. 1 in the nation in triples, with two, while Zarbnisky’s two saves also are tied for the nation’s lead. Sophomore infielder Tevin Tucker has stolen five bases this season, good for a tie for No. 3 nationally.


As a team, WVU ranks No. 4 nationally in triples (4), No. 5 in sacrifice bunts (5) and No. 7 in stolen bases (14).


Kennesaw State (3-1) is led by 29th-year coach Mike Sansing, who owns more than 1,100 victories in his three-decade-long career. The Owls are averaging 9.8 runs per game and have scored 10 or more in three of their four games this season.


KSU, which finished 27-29 last season, is led by senior outfielder Terence Norman, the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, and redshirt senior infielder Justin Russell, a preseason All-ASUN selection.


Saint Joseph’s (1-3) is under the direction of 12th-year coach Fritz Hamburg, who holds a 257-298-1mark with the Hawks. After defeating Ohio State, 7-3, in its season opener, SJU has dropped three in a row to Pitt, Iowa and Kent State.


The Hawks finished 21-28 a year ago, including 13-11 in Atlantic 10 play.


Illinois (1-2) is led by 15th-year coach Dan Hartleb, who has won nearly 450 career games. The Fighting Illini, who went 36-21 in 2019, are coming off an appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. The squad topped Milwaukee before falling to Seton Hall and No. 18 Wake Forest to begin the new year.


Illinois was picked to finished seventh in the Big Ten preseason coaches’ poll. The team is led by senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Acton, who is featured on the NCBWA’s Stopper of the Year Watch List. He was a finalist for the award last season, as well as a first-team All-America selection after leading the nation with 19 saves.


Twenty-fifth year coach Gary Gilmore leads Coastal Carolina (2-1) in 2020. In all, he has tallied more than 1,000 wins in his coaching career.


The Chanticleers also reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago, finishing 1-2 in the Atlanta Regional. Overall, the squad finished 36-26-1 in 2019. CCU has played in four NCAA Regionals since 2015, including its 2016 National Championship.


Coastal, which was picked to finish second in the Sun Belt East Division, is led by junior outfielder Parker Chavers, a preseason All-American. He hit .316 with 15 home runs, four triples, nine doubles, 54 RBIs, and 54 runs scored in 2019.
