Mountaineers Ready for European Tour
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (August 5, 2015) - West Virginia University women’s basketball begins its 10-day tour of Europe on Wednesday. The Mountaineers are schedule to play four games and visit various cultural sites in London, Barcelona and Madrid.
As permitted by the NCAA every four years, the Mountaineers will take an overseas trip that includes 10 practices and four games. In 2011, the team toured France and Italy and in 2007 visited Australia. The Mountaineers made the NCAA Tournament after participating in both of those trips.
With 11 newcomers, including Florida State transfer Chania Ray, this is a perfect year for Mike Carey’s squad to get in extra days of practice before the season starts.
Other newcomers include a pair of transfers: Arielle Roberson (Colorado) and Desiree Rhodes (Wabash Valley College). WVU welcomes eight freshmen to this year’s squad: Alexis Brewer (Buffalo, Ky.), Anja Martin (San Antonio, Texas), Tynice Martin (Atlanta, Ga.), Katrina Pardee (Cedar Park, Texas), Yassemeen “Yazzy” Sa’Dullah (Burbank, Calif.), Lauren Saiki (Monterey Park, Calif.), Marlena Schmidt (Eighty Four, Pa.) and Olivia Seggie (Morgantown, W.Va.).
“We have so many new players,” said coach Carey. “It will be good for team building and a great experience for the players. We are going to hold out a couple of players, but it’ll be a good experience for our young players. They’ll be able to get a lot of reps and we’ll see what they can do in a game situation.”
The Mountaineers return five veterans that earned experience during last year’s WNIT title game run. Unanimous All-Big 12 selection and All-America Honorable Mention Bria Holmes returns for her senior year. Lanay Montgomery, the Big 12’s leading shot blocker, returns after starting every game last season. Additionally, sophomore Teana Muldrow, senior Jessica Morton and senior Kayla Montgomery also share game experience from last year.
West Virginia opens its tour slate in London against Barking Abbey on Saturday, August 5, at 1 p.m. ET/6 p.m. GMT. The Mountaineers then play a pair of games against the Catalan All-Stars in Barcelona on Monday and Tuesday, August 10-11. Both of those tip times are scheduled for 1 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CET. The tour concludes with a game against C.R.E.F. Hola Madrid on Thursday, August 13, at 2 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CET in Madrid, Spain.
