Mountaineers Rank No. 4 in NSCAA Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 29, 2015) – Riding a nine-match shutout win streak, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team ranks a program-best No. 4 in today’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I Women’s Top 25 Poll.

Today’s ranking is the team’s best position ever in the coaches’ poll. The Mountaineers (10-1, 1-0) were ranked No. 5 in last week’s poll. Prior to this season, WVU hit No. 6 three times in 2006.

Just five points separate WVU and No. 3 Virginia (8-1-1, 2-1 ACC), last week’s top-ranked team. The Cavaliers received one first-place vote this week.

North Carolina (10-0-1, 3-0 ACC) received 29 of the possible 31 first-place votes and moved up to No. 1. Florida State (9-1-1, 2-0-1 ACC), the reigning national champions, also received a first-place vote and ranks No. 2.

Stanford (7-2, 1-0 Pac-12) trails WVU by 75 points and ranks No. 5. BYU (8-1-1) ranks No. 6, and Clemson (8-1-1, 2-1 ACC) ranks No. 7. Auburn (10-1, 3-1 SEC) sits at No. 8, and Virginia Tech (10-1-1, 2-1 ACC) and South Carolina (10-1, 4-0 SEC) follow at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

The Mountaineers are the highest-ranked Big 12 Conference team. Texas Tech (7-1-3, 0-0-1) ranks No. 15, and Oklahoma continues to receive votes.

WVU opened the defense of its three straight Big 12 Conference titles with a 2-0 win over Texas on Friday, Sept. 25, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The win pushed the team’s home conference unbeaten streak to 27. WVU shows an NCAA-best 10 clean sheets on the season.

WVU closes its five-match homestand against TCU on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. It’s a “Pink Match” for breast cancer awareness, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink. The first 300 fans through the gate will receive a pink glow stick. It also is a “Dollar Night,” and all tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each. Additionally, the match also is the team’s “Soctoberfest” celebration, and specialty German food and beverage options will be available at the concession stands.
