MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Aug. 24, 2023) – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team fell, 2-1, to No. 8 Penn State at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Thursday night.

Penn State never trailed in the match, taking a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of the first half. Despite a Mountaineer equalizer in the 53rd minute, the Nittany Lions reclaimed the lead with a go-ahead goal at the 84:06 mark to take the eventual win.

Sophomore Taylor White scored her second goal of the season, as well as her second in as many matches to bring the Mountaineers level early in the second half. A well-placed ball by junior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran set up a perfect opportunity for White, who slotted the ball past the PSU keeper to equalize. However, it was Penn State who took home the win after a late goal in the 85th minute.

Although the score line showed a PSU victory, West Virginia (1-2) held an advantage in shots, 10-8, and shots on goal, 6-4. The squads were level in corner kicks with four apiece.

Heredia-Beltran paced the team with three shots and two on goal, as well as the assist on White’s goal. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey made a pair of saves in the loss.

With the loss, West Virginia falls to 7-13-3 all-time against the Nittany Lions, including 5-5-1 in games played in Morgantown.

The Mountaineers conclude their three-game homestand on Sunday, Aug. 27, when Duquesne visits Morgantown for a 1 p.m. ET, kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. It’s WVU’s annual Pups on the Pitch match, and fans are invited to bring their dogs to enjoy the game. All dogs in attendance must have proof of vaccination and a signed Dog Day Waiver.
