Mountaineers Earn Program’s Second-Best Ranking
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 7, 2015) – On the heels of a two-win weekend which saw the West Virginia University women’s soccer team topple a regional foe and set multiple program records, the Mountaineers check in at No. 5 in this week’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 Poll.
Today’s ranking is WVU’s second-highest ranking in any poll in the program’s 20-year history. The Mountaineers were ranked No. 4 in the Soccer Buzz Poll on Nov. 4, 2002.
WVU (5-1) jumped six spots in this week’s poll after sitting at No. 11 the previous two weeks. The Mountaineers are the highest-ranked Big 12 Conference team, with Texas Tech (3-1-1) following at No. 16.
Virginia (4-0-1) continues to sit at No. 1, while Stanford (3-0) ranks No. 2, Florida State (4-1) is No. 3 and North Carolina (5-0-1) is No. 4.
Notre Dame (5-0-1) sits behind WVU at No. 6, and Florida (4-1) ranks No. 7. Penn State (3-1-1) moved down three spots to No. 8, and Virginia Tech (6-0-1), the lone team to score on the Mountaineers this season, ranks No. 9. BYU (4-0) checks in at No. 10.
WVU handed the Nittany Lions their first loss of the season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Sept. 4. Senior midfielder Amanda Hill tallied the game-winner in the eighth minute. The Mountaineer defense held the PSU attack to eight shots, with only two landing on frame. WVU has now defeated at least one top-10 team in each of the last 11 straight seasons.
The Mountaineers followed the victory with a record-setting 8-0 win over Villanova on Sept. 6 in Morgantown. The eight scores matched a school record set in 2006 and hit again in 2008. Sophomore forward Michaela Abam tallied a program-record four goals in the victory, and senior forward Kailey Utley chipped in four assists, also a school record. Freshman forward Nia Gordon tallied the game-winner 83 seconds into the match for the fourth-fastest goal in school history.
WVU returns to the road and takes on Ohio State (4-0-1) on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m., at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes are receiving votes in today’s TDS.com Poll.
The Mountaineers then face Longwood at DDSS on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. The team will host a postgame clinic for kids 13 and under at Dreamswork Field. It also is “Camper Reunion Day,” with free admission for those who wear their 2015 camp t-shirt. Additionally, kids under 13 who bring a completed Musket Coloring Sheet to the DDSS gate will receive one free youth admission and will be entered into a drawing to win a plush Musket toy.
