Inexperienced defensive backs and a new DB coach should be interesting. Dana better hire a good one and please no JC/Sun Belt caliber coach who was a safties coach. This is Big12 football so he better hire someone who knows how to teach guys to cover Big12 caliber receivers or get ready to watch guys getting burnt all game again.

P.S. really first class for him to wait until March to leave huh:flush:

Depends on when he was offered. ....and the 'real' reason he chose to leave.

Did he have a long term contract with WVU(doubtful).

Did he get more money ?

Is his first obligation to you or his family and future ?

------

Trust me... WV is a great state to live in but many of us leave it because we don't want to mine coal, cut trees, or simply hope that the FBI expands their complex.

he waited until after signing day. seems like the right thing to do... unless you're one of his recruits.

they're saying lyons is fed up and must see results before extending dana... and mitchell left for security. if true, obviously, mitchell does not expect the kind of year that results in a contract extension.

Exactly - a tea leaf that suggest bigger issues that could lead to other rats jumping off before the ship sinks

First heard of it. One of the true tangible, publicly known losses due to the up in the air contract situation, it appears. I wish the best for the football side of things & will be rooting for a turnaround however it may come. Thankful to have a proven, winning leader & stabilized staff for our basketball program.

I think that he gave his best to WVU.
I wish him the best ... even at VT.

I liked the guy a lot.
Very hard to replace.

A coach is free to roam the cabin. The captain turned off the seat belt light long ago. The Mountaineer program will not miss a beat. Next.

Although The Mountaineer defense was much improved in 2015. It still was only ranked #61 nationally in overall defense. The defense lost a lot of experience and may struggle this upcoming season. Not something to look forward too as a fan that likes watching a defense shut down a opponents offense.

A real fan loves to see the offense score 100 points and the defense SHUT DOWN the opposition. Fans are like that. By the way..............they want to do this to the Texas and Oklahoma's of the sports world. Not the Georgia Southern's etc.

If it's less than first class for Mitchell to leave us this late, what will it be for the guy we hire to leave his current job even later?

It doesn't really sound as if Mitchell has been out there desperately looking for a job and jumped when he finally found one. It sounds to me like he was very recently approached with an offer for a job he considered better.

I don't think it's disloyal or low class to take a job you'd rather have.

The label "real fan" is subjective. High scoring offenses are exciting and fun to watch but IMO so is a smothering defense fun to watch.

Not sure what your implying with the Georgia Southern sarcasm laden statement I personally would be disappointed to see the UT and/or OU games go away.

But back to the topic. Having Mitchell leave is not the end of the world. Will it impact the upcoming season? IMO it will only have a short term effect on the defensive side of things. Considering the defense is in rebuild/retooling mode anyway.

2XBoy....................I ain't implying nothing with respect to GA Southern and meant no sarcasm. Now, why in the hail are you coming after me with sarcasm? Wake up..........Amurika!

Assistant coaches generally move from program to program every couple years as it helps boost their resume if they have success at multiple schools in different conferences. Lifers like Bud Foster are rare though it will certainly help Mitchell to learn under a proven DC like him. Plus, the 335 is mostly a gimmick defense so I'm guessing Mitchell liked the idea of being successful in a conventional defense that more schools run.

However I'm guessing the most important factor is job security. Correct me if I wrong, but Mitchell was on a 1 year contract at WVU. I'm sure VT locked him up for at least 2-3 years. Plus they have a new coach that is going to get many years to prove himself. This is the same program that kept Beamer around after having losing seasons in 4 of his first 6 years, and his 2 non losing seasons his best win total was 6.

The OP must have been a writer for General Hospital. ....no such thing as being over dramatic.

Next he'll be talking Luke, Laura, Pitt, and VT......Not to mention weather machines.....

agree. won't make much difference for this year's team

This will be the year to see if Gibby is a good DC or not. We replace all the linebackers and a lot of people in the secondary. The good news is we get OU, TCU, and BU at home. If these new linebackers step up and we can get a pass rush, all should be fine, but I recognize that's a big "if"

The offense is going to move the ball and score points. Say what you want about Skyler, but he's getting better and these receivers are maturing before our eyes.

I'm thinking 8-4. Mizzou, BYU, and YSU should all be wins. Plus Kansas, ISU, KSU (gotta beat them once). That's 6 right there just need to win 2 against BU, TCU, OU, Texas, Ok St, and Tech.

I think it's doable.

Speak for yourself. He's more welcome here than you.

You lost your best to Keaton, you promised to never come back.

The guy you are replying actually isn't an idiot, surprisingly enough. He's just a "Stew man" AKA a grey hair that has hated DH since the day he stepped foot in Morgantown.

I'm more concerned about the quality of the young men playing CB than the coach. Can't make chicken salad out of Shicken shit.

So you're saying all of our corners are shit?
\
No, I'm saying that the quality of the CB will have more of an impact than who is coaching them. Look at how bad Rumph played against ASU. REally, the pass rush makes playing DB much easier.

I think our corner backs next year will surprise if we can hire a good CB coach. Hearing the twins are legit and crawford has been a lot better than expected. Add in Rasul douglas and Nana and I think we might be be better off than you think.

There are plenty of CB candidates. We just need a leader to bring them back to the barn. Overall, program is on a slippery slope. Lyons has something in mind for us Mountaineers. Mitchel leaving not crucial as long as the attrition does not continue. If It does, then head for the hills.

He had a bet with Keaton over the Capital Classic, and lost. He even said Gordon Gee gave him a personal assurance the game would continue - LOL.

The Fellowship of Hank is persistent but easy to identify. Set the right bait and they'll bite everytime.
