As we righteously celebrate our honored war dead this weekend, please realize this can be a hard holiday for many living veterans.
America has been engaged in active combat for basically 35 of the past 60 years. The veterans in your life may not talk about it, but a great many of them were friends with somebody who was killed in action. The memories of those lost friends can hit hard this weekend, as can survivor’s guilt.
So if your cousin Joe the former Army Ranger is having one too many beers at the family barbecue and is sitting off by himself, please give him some slack.
I’m not saying you should not celebrate—you SHOULD. Those who gave all would want you to.
I’m just making a point about the living that some miss.
