of this great country! As an old Army boy myself can't agree with your assessment of our branch which was probably tongue in cheek but appreciate your service and sacrifice.

Air Assault used to be at Ft. Campbell...tough training! I was bean counter so didn't do much snake eating.Meh, I was in the ARMY Guard not regular ARMY so it's a shallow comparison. I worked around some ARMY units and went to a school in Fort Campbell, nothing but respect
Thank you also Tony

Hey bro, you missed out on top pay and great food all provided by the taxpayers! All smack aside ... thanks to both of you.
I respect anybody that served for their service. I don't respect much else about some of them (not talking about you guys) but always respect that.
I haven't served, but have worked with the military as contractor or DoD civilian nearly my entire career. There are a few outliers, but far and away a fine group of people top to bottom.

Actually the food in garrison wasn't bad at all, in fact pretty good ! But the field rations as I seem to remember were bad, cold MRE's and some kind of ready meal designed to serve hot that was god awful. Sometimes a soldier needs to keep a sense of humor!Witty as always [cheers]
Thanks, I enjoyed my 8 years and would do it all over again. May have even stuck it out to retirement but my fiancé at the time was ready for me to be home. I miss it, still have friends in. My Company Commander in 2/6 was from Wheeling, Austin "Sparky" Renfory big EER fan but a Herd fan also. He let me have the morning off to watch the 97 MACC and Motor City Bowl while in Okinawa. Some passed on, Jeff Taylor being one. Those guys deserve all the credit, they made the ultimate sacrifice, I'm still breathing
I only did four years but like you have many fond memories and seem to have forgotten about all the crummy times! Thanks, I enjoyed my 8 years and would do it all over again. Don't take any of this board stuff personally, it's just fun breaking people's balls a little. With only a couple exceptions, I'd have beers with any of you guys

I spent many years on a Navy base. I was impressed and envious of the quality of all of the facilities there. The OClub had the best clam chowder I've ever had in my life. The drill hall was head and shoulders above any other fitness center I've ever been a member of as well.
I guess that's just human nature with guys....we remember the good, just forget the bad!Amazingly I have more fond memories of the bad times. Miserable being in the rain for days on end, swamp feet, monkey butt, 33 mile humps, cramps to the point you want to die, shin splints, formation, formation, and wait on the next one.
Yeah those bases were pristine. I was at a sub base in Kings bay, GA, Norfolk also and the NAVY lived like kings. Lejuene was basic. But our guns were great and our MWR program was top shelf.
Oh yeah, their MWR program had an entirely different base with campsites, cabins, driving range, miniature golf, boat ramps, etc. The golf course on the actual base was pretty nice too, but nowhere near as nice as the Air Force bases.

I said guns, I meant gyms. Obviously we had better guns.
I take EVERYTHING personally....to hell with all of youHell I don't, same here EER
As you should. What a disgraceful human being you are.I take EVERYTHING personally....to hell with all of you
I freakin' loved the drill hall. 3 basketball courts, indoor and beach volleyball courts, nice indoor pool (there was another outdoor pool, olympic sized on base too), racquetball courts, and then 4 different fitness/weight rooms.
One was all cardio equipment, one was full of some electronically controlled hydraulic equipment or something (the harder you pushed hte more it resisted), the other was full of Cybex type equipment and a few cardio machines, and then down in the basement was the freeweight room.
They also had the coolest and most exhausting piece of equipment I've ever used. It was like a rock climbing wall treadmill. It was about 10 feet tall and you started climbing while it started going like a treadmill. The first time I did it I got off and thought for sure I'd done about 10 minutes, looked at the timer and it was about 2:45.
They had speed bags and heavy bags up in the corners too. Saunas in the lockerrooms, whirlpool out by the pool.
I can only assume they didn't like swimming, volleyball, basketball, boxing, cardio, weights, rock climbing, walking, golf, or anything at all really.
Oh, I forgot until I was just typing that, they had an outdoor rink for roller hockey with leagues. Baseball and softball fields also.
Of course there were bike/walking/running lanes on the side of all the roads on the base too.
Bases have all the amenities anyone can ask for. The PX was tax free also, which was nice.
Yeah, as a civilian I couldn't use the PX, but beyond being tax free the prices were really really good from what people told me. Just not much of a selection on many things.
They had fishing ponds and hunting areas too, and a marina where military could go and rent boats (and sailboats). Fishing dock also.
I loved that place. It was far and away the best job I ever had too. At least the most fun. How many people get to fly F/A-18 and H60 simulators? I got to fly the Harrier simulator a couple of times too.
That's awesome. Yes the fishing was awesome
