Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood would be very, very proud

I mean it's not like infowars to be wrong about anything.

If you find any facts incorrect, please feel free to correct. What we do know for a fact is that Sanger believed in eugenics, wanting to wipe out the black race. She founded Planned Parenthood to accomplish that mission. It is working, at least to some degree.

OK - She didn't want to "wipe out" the black race. Not all of Eugenics was based on racism. She worked closely with black doctors, church leaders, etc.

You're right. She really didn't mean this:

"We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members."

It's shocking to me that libs on the board defend Sanger. I'm actually astounded. She was the epitome of a racist. Yet, because she founded Planned Parenthood, they apparently overlook that "slight" flaw in her character. Where has intellectual honesty gone.

"We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members."
Those who point a finger at Sanger as a racist often cite a particular statement in claiming she harbored ill will toward black people. In a Dec. 10, 1939, letter, she wrote that "We don’t want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs."

But PolitFact Georgia debunked those who would read the statement as something sinister.

"Sanger’s correspondence shows this sentence advocates for black doctors and ministers to play leadership roles in the Negro Project to avoid misunderstandings. Lynchings and Jim Crow laws gave blacks good reason to be wary of attempts to limit the number of children they bore. In Harlem, she hired a black doctor and social worker to quell those fears," the article says.

She attracted an impressive roster of supporters, including DuBois; Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of National Council of Negro Women; and the pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church. Eleanor Roosevelt also backed the effort.

"For Sanger to launch a genocidal plot behind their backs and leave no true evidence in her numerous writings would require powers just shy of witchcraft," the PolitiFact piece notes.

Malthusianism is a school of ideas derived from the political/economic thought of the Reverend Thomas Robert Malthus, as laid out in his 1798 writings, An Essay on the Principle of Population, which describes how unchecked population growth is exponential while the growth of the food supply was expected to be arithmetical. Malthus believed there were two types of "checks" that could then reduce the population, returning it to a more sustainablelevel. He believed there were "preventive checks" such as moral restraints (abstinence, delayed marriage until finances become balanced), and restricting marriage against persons suffering poverty or defects. Malthus believed in "positive checks", which lead to 'premature' death: disease, starvation, war, resulting in what is called a Malthusian catastrophe. The catastrophe would return population to a lower, more "sustainable", level.[1][2] The term has been applied in different ways over the last two hundred years, and has been linked to a variety of other political and social movements, but almost always refers to advocates of population control.[3]

Not sure how this rises up to the level of wiping out the black population. Many people today also feel that children she be born in wedlock and when people are of sound financial footing. Don't see how that is racist.

  • Birth control is not contraception indiscriminately and thoughtlessly practiced. It means the release and cultivation of the better racial elements in our society, and the gradual suppression, elimination and eventual extirpation of defective stocks— those human weeds which threaten the blooming of the finest flowers of American civilization.

She even presented at a Ku Klux Klan rally in 1926 in Silver Lake, N.J. She recounted this event in her autobiography: “I accepted an invitation to talk to the women’s branch of the Ku Klux Klan … I saw through the door dim figures parading with banners and illuminated crosses … I was escorted to the platform, was introduced, and began to speak … In the end, through simple illustrations I believed I had accomplished my purpose. A dozen invitations to speak to similar groups were proffered” (Margaret Sanger, “An Autobiography,” Page 366). That she generated enthusiasm among some of America’s leading racists says something about the content and tone of her remarks.

Yet another quote:

  • Birth control is not contraception indiscriminately and thoughtlessly practiced. It means the release and cultivation of the better racial elements in our society, and the gradual suppression, elimination and eventual extirpation of defective stocks— those human weeds which threaten the blooming of the finest flowers of American civilization.

A lot of people in the African American community see it differently. Believe me.....Sanger is viewed as a racist by many in that community.

If Trump or any GOP supporter said half the things Sanger did, libs on this board would be going ballistic. Intellectual dishonesty.

It is accurate in their eyes. My wife was an adoption social worker and I spent many Sundays in many African American churches when she was invited to attend. What I heard from the Church leadership was how they felt about the whole issue.

Margaret wanted to wipe out the black race. Her eugenics crusade lead to Planned Parenthood.

Blacks comprise 13% of the population but account for 35% of all abortions. I'm sure Sanger would be pleased but want more. Overall roughly 55% of all abortions are black or hispanic.
Lol, the GOP, fighting the same stupid battles since forever.

As far as I can see, the GOP seems to be winning the battles right now. And with Trump appointing future Supreme Court justices, who knows what future decisions will be made regarding any issues. I suspect they will be more in line with conservative jurisprudence.

Not a fan of hers but the body of her work would suggest she was a proponent of Eugenics to create a better society than the elimination of a race. There is a very important difference there. Most do believe that her goal was provide birth control to allow women to advance out of poverty as in poor people can't afford additional kids....

It is 2016 not 1926. What was acceptable to say and do 90 years ago no longer applies in many cases and especially when it comes to race.

Her body of quotes seems to strongly suggest she felt blacks inferior and in need of extermination. How you defend this woman is beside me.

Her body of work? You mean eugenics?

If that is the case, then stop talking about slavery. Stop talking about the civil war and the Stars and Stripes. Then stop talking about how evil the Founders were because they were slave owners. Libs can't have it both ways.

More importantly, your argument is insane. Eugenics is just as despicable today as it was in 1926. The elimination of a race or those with disabilities is as awful today as it was in 1926.

I agree Eugenics is despicable. But history shows it was not an uncommon topic and Eugenics was practiced. Do you know that the state of Virginia was sterilizing "unfit" women as late as 1979?

From a UVA Article: Although Virginia formally adopted a sterilization law in 1924, sterilization was not practiced widely until after the United State Supreme Court ruling against Carrie Buck in 1927. This ruling set a precedent on the legality of sterilization not only in Virginia but also throughout the nation. During the 1930’s, immediately after this Supreme Court ruling, sterilization in Virginia occurred at its highest rate with approximately 13 sterilizations per 100,000 state residents. A 1938 report stated that 632 of the first 1,000 patients sterilized had been paroled, and that 812 of the same group were from impoverished families (Trent 1994, 217). After the 1930’s – prior to, during, and following WWII – sterilization initially decreased and thereafter maintained a fairly constant rate. After this, sterilization rates dropped dramatically until the practice faded out and then was subsequently forced out of practice with the repeal of the 1924 act in 1974 and the additional removal of all mention of eugenic sterilization to prevent “hereditary forms of mental illness that are recurrent” from being passed on from Virginia code in 1979

The fact that it was practiced does not make it any less despicable. Do you not agree? And Sanger wanted to eradicate blacks, not because of mental defect, which was the Virginia statute, but because she felt them inferior. That is the stuff of Hitler.

I don't disagree that it is despicable. Virginia sterilized many black women for pretty much any reason. Yes they stuff of Hitler. I am not defending her. Whether black or white, she didn't want impoverished women having kids as it was more mouths to feed and a burden to families and societies and the practice removed less desirable people kids from the planet (her views).

Very good synopsis on your part.
