WVU Release Major Named WVU Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 1, 2024) – Junior pitcher Aidan Major of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.



Against Oklahoma State on March 29, Major struck out a career-high 13 batters in 8.0 innings while allowing just two runs and walking only one. It was the most strikeouts by a WVU pitcher since 2022.



On the season, the Mill Hall, Pennsylvania native has a 3.64 ERA and 53 strikeouts, good enough for 28th in the nation and third in the Big 12.



Major and the rest of the Mountaineers will be back on the diamond this weekend at Kansas for a three-game series, beginning Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m. ET.



This Week in Baseball: West Virginia hits the road to take on Kansas for three games in Lawrence, Kansas … first pitch on Friday, April 5, is set for 7 p.m. ET, Saturday, April 6, for 3 p.m. and Sunday, April 7, for 12:30 p.m. … all three games will be available to stream on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ as well as the Mountaineer Sports Network.



Last Week in Baseball:
The Mountaineers went 2-2 on the week, winning a midweek game against Akron before winning one of three over the weekend against Oklahoma State … WVU defeated the Zips, 6-2, getting multiple hits from five different players and six combined scoreless innings from the bullpen … on March 29, the Mountaineers dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the Cowboys … junior Aidan Major struck out 13 in eight innings pitched while junior Grant Hussey hit his sixth home run of the year … the Cowboys won game two, 10-1, in extra innings as they scored nine runs in the 11th inning … West Virginia salvaged the series finale on March 31, with a 15-10 win … freshman Spencer Barnett had four hits and drove in five runs while Kyle West tallied four RBI.

West Virginia is now 16-12 overall and 5-4 in the Big 12 … Major’s 13 strikeouts against Oklahoma State were the most for a WVU pitcher since Jacob Watters struck out 15 against Texas in 2022 … Hussey and senior Reed Chumley each hit home runs over the weekend to give them each six on the season, the most on the team … Barnett became the third Mountaineer this season with four hits in a game and five RBI in a game … freshman Aaron Jamison stole home against Akron, the first straight steal of home for a Mountaineer since Landon Wallace did so against Appalachian State last season … WVU matched a season high with seven steals against the Zips … senior Derek Clark tossed nine innings for the second straight outing.



This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will play host to Kansas on Friday, April 5, and Iowa State on Sunday, April 7, to finish its home slate for the 2023-24 season ... the Iowa State match will serve as Senior Day as the program will also celebrate its 50th anniversary ... senior Momoko Nagato and graduate students Love-Star Alexis and Ting-Pei Chang will be honored for their contributions to the tennis program before the match.



Last Week in Tennis:
The Mountaineers lost to No. 1 Oklahoma State, 7-0, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on March 28, and No. 75 Kansas State, 4-3, in Manhattan, Kansas, on March 30.



Notes:
West Virginia’s 11-1 record through 12 matches was its best record to start the season since 1986 when the team began 12-0 ... for the first time in program history, WVU has won multiple Big 12 matches in a single season ... with the win against Houston, the Mountaineers will also have a winning record for the first time since 2010.



This Week in Golf:
West Virginia will close out the regular season on Monday, April 15, and Tuesday, April 16, hosting the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia.

Junior golfer Max Green shot 5-under-par to finish tied for fourth place at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, South Carolina … Green posted rounds of 67-74-70=211 to finish 5-under-par … fifth-year senior Trent Tipton tied for 14th place with rounds of 74-70-71=215 (-1) … senior Will Stakel finished +6 and tied for 45th place, shooting 74-72-76=222 … senior Jackson Davenport tied for 55th place at +7 with rounds of 73-73-77=223, and junior Todd Duncan finished 11-over-par with rounds of 80-72-75=227 … the Mountaineers finished in eighth place at the 15-team event with rounds of 288-287-292=867 (+3).




This week in Track & Field: West Virginia heads to the Dalton Ebanks Invitational on April 5-6, which will be held at the George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Virginia.



Last week in Track & Field:
West Virginia competed at the Raleigh Relays on March 29-30, in Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh on March 30 … the Raleigh Relays were highlighted by redshirt junior Cassandra Williamson, who finished fifteenth overall in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:05.94 … also in the women’s 800 meters freshman Kishay Rowe added a personal best with a time of 2:07.31, followed by redshirt senior Mikenna Vanderheyden with a time of 2:07.81.



Notes: Williamson ranks eighth overall in the Big 12 women’s 800-meter rankings after posting a season best time at the Raleigh Relays … Rowe follows behind at No. 11 in the conference standings after her personal best time at the relays.



This Week in Rowing: West Virginia will host the Gold and Blue Regatta in Morgantown on Saturday, April 6.



Last Week in Rowing:
The Mountaineers competed in the Sunshine State Invitational at Nathen Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
