Multiple outlets reporting the smoke.

Great haul? Or overrated coach who's failed multiple times?

I say slam dunk for the Illini if true.

Lovie Smith is a good coach. Perhaps college level is what he will be great at? A lot of people felt that he was under-appreciated while coaching the Bears. So he has a lot of supporters there already to help him get a quick start. When you have the opportunity to hire a coach with experience, at high levels, then you have to pull the trigger. I hate it for the coach that was fired, but that's how it is. Remember Ohio State's situation after Tressel? A lot of people felt that the interim head coach was done wrong in favor of Urban Meyer. How'd that turn out?

Lovie Smith has proven a solid coach when given time. If Tech loses him I'd shudder to think who they'd get. I doubt anyone near Tubby's stature will be available.

EDIT: If you read this and have no clue what I'm talking about, it was because I was tired and thought this post was about Tubby Smith, not Lovie.

Totally confused here. Are you talking about Tubby Smith? Or Lovie Smith?

I have a couple associates who are UI grads, and it appears Smith is currently being thought of as a "what have we got to lose" kind-of candidate.

I don't think anyone knows if he can recruit, and I guess the jury is out as to how he'll connect with 19 year olds. But I myself don't know of an alternative; not to mention the fact there aren't exactly a multitude of marketable (or even remotely attractive) candidates out there. But if LS has any kind of juice still lying around in Chicagoland, I see no reason why they shouldn't try and tap into it.

If I were a UI fan, I might be willing to get behind this choice.

We all saw a loser like Stoops gain momentum at UK. I don't think logically he would be a top choice, but that is a program that is in dire need of some life injected in the program. An African American hire with NFL HC experience and extreme familiarity with the area of Chicago sounds like a pretty good recipe to drum up a buzz around the program. If all he does is get some talent on the roster for the next guy he's done his job.
