Assuming no one else leaves (I think the deadline is July 18th), what do we need to shore up the team?
PG - We are in a great place with Kerr. But we need someone behind him. Perez could play in a pinch as could Kobe. Mulcahy would be a terrific pick-up. I have been told he is visiting this weekend. I hope it is true. I think Mulcahy could play the 1, 2 and 3. I know he is being heavily recruited. Could Toussaint return? Although he has his weaknesses as a PG, he could provide some crucial back-up minutes, at both the 1 and the 2.
SG - Our deepest position by far. Battle will start. Silverio is a high quality back-up. Wilson and Kobe will also play the 2. Perez could as well. Our strongest position.
SF - Perez seems destined to start. Harris can play the 3 although he is still a huge unknown. We need a player that can hopefully be versatile enough to play the 3 and the 4. Can we find one in the portal? We have to hope that some really good players graduate this summer and enter the portal as graduate students.
PF - Our weakest position by far. Harris and Suemnick. Ugh. We have to replace Mitchell. Hopefully with a stretch 4, as Mitchell was because, to this point, Perez has not shown to be a quality 3 point shooter. If the PF we get is not a stretch 4 and Perez is playing the 3, our spacing gets compacted. Not good. If not a stretch 4, then a tough, hard nosed defender and rebounder and inside scorer coupled with a 3 that can stretch the floor. Kuntz has his work cut out for him.
C - Edwards is a star. Perhaps 1st or 2nd team all Big 12. But we have zero players behind him. Another huge portal need. Could Wague and/or Okonkwo come back? The answer is yes. How likely is that? I wish I knew. But we need someone of Wague's quality or better.
Kuntz needs to find a PF, C and PG in that order of importance. Mitchell is the hardest to replace. Let's see what Kuntz and staff can do. Eilert has his work cut out for him. The good news is that we have a very strong core in Kerr, Battle, Silverio, Perez and Edwards. If Harris makes that huge second year leap, we are in even better shape. And we have the NIL fire power to compete.
