Obviously, we'll miss the leadership from Munden and Fox on the left side of the infield. I really had higher hopes for those two at the beginning of the season, but they went in a bit of a slump mid-season and didn't finish with the numbers I feel they were capable of. Good players, great representatives of WVU and helped us transition to the Big 12. The other two are Johnson, who was listed as a utility player not because he was so versatile, but because he was a defensive liability who's bat they wanted to get in the lineup however they could, and O'Brien, who's playing time diminished significantly.
That leaves 30 guys on the roster, including guys who may be redshirting, returning next year without counting possible attrition. If we could somehow sweep tomorrow and get some help, unless I'm mistaken, it would have us finishing 5th, which would be outperforming preseason poll expectations for the third consecutive season. Obviously, the goal is to compete for championships and make the CWS, but this is about what I expected or a little better since we were replacing a school record number of MLB draft picks and almost 460 innings of pitching, which is INSANE. Not bad for a massive rebuild with an extremely young team who spent the first two months of the season basically on the road.
We've finally got a Big 12 caliber facility, which will only improve as construction is completed and an IPF is built, and it will help us recruit and get better. Brace yourself. Good times ahead.
