MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 3, 2023) – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team dropped its final nonconference road match of the season, falling 3-1 to Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia, on Sunday afternoon.

West Virginia (2-4) took an early lead in the first half, but Liberty tallied three second-half goals to take the upset victory over the Mountaineers.

Senior midfielder Chloe Adler put the Mountaineers on the board in the 16th minute with a swift kick just in front of the goal. Sophomore forward Taylor White placed the ball in the perfect spot for Adler to give WVU the advantage early in the first half.

The second half opened with West Virginia still holding on to the lead, but Liberty drew one back with a penalty goal in the 72nd minute. From there, both teams fought for the go-ahead goal, but it was the Flames who found the go-ahead, as well as an insurance tally in the 87th minute to secure the win.

Liberty outshot West Virginia, 12-7, including 8-2 in shots on goal and 6-1 in corner kicks. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey notched five saves on the afternoon. Junior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran paced the team with two shots, while Adler scored the goal and White tallied the assist.

With the loss, WVU is now 0-1 all-time against Liberty, as the two teams met on the pitch for the first time in program history on Sunday. The Flames became the Mountaineers’ 119th different opponent, as WVU is now 6-2-2 against first-time opponents over the last six seasons.

West Virginia now returns to Morgantown to host Auburn on Thursday, Sept. 7. It’s Fan Appreciation Night, and kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown is set for 7 p.m. ET.
