I just turned 64 last week and as you two are supporters of two stories programs with numerous National Championships in football and basketball that all Sons of Marshall have the utmost respect for, I will turn to you for an answer to a burning question. Will WVU ever win anything of real note in college athletics? As I stated earlier earlier , I'm not getting any younger and unlike many members of the great Herd nation, I don't really intrinsically hate WVU, I think they are delusional, misguided and poorly counseled at times but no visceral hate for the Mounties. Will they ever live up to the bravado that comes out of Morgantown?

Never in football. WVU doesn't recruit at a level to ever win a National Championship in football. tHuggs has been WVU's best chance in basketball since the Jerry West days, but making the Final Four once every half of a century makes WVU a long shot. Further, there will likely be a drop-off once tHuggs retires or dies, as nobody else has his combination of winning at other schools and devotion to WVU. WVU will be a preseason Top 10 team next season, if, and it's a big if, everybody returns again like this past year. If Culver leaves--and he should--then WVU will be a Top 25 team, but not Top 10, and won't be a Final Four contender. McBride looks like an NBA player to me, so he may leave earlier than WVU fans think or hope, and, if for some reason, he and Culver were to leave now, then WVU would be screwed, and tHuggs would strongly consider retirement.

So the Mounties are not in a significantly better position than MU for real post season honors?

Correct, Tony. Although I would add that Marshall's chances of winning C-USA regular season and/or tournament titles are significantly better than WVU's chances to win Big 12 championships in the revenue-producing sports.

WVU had a shot to make it to the final four, but blew it against a Hall of Fame coach at Syracuse.

The sea had even parted for them, but they chose not to jump in and swim. I think they could have beaten Houston, had they gotten past the Hall of Famer's squad. Loyola-Chicago might have been too tough of an obstacle though, but better matchup than Illinois would have presented, in my opinion.

Like King stated, I don't see the Mountaineers ever winning a football championship. It's just too tough to run the table in the Big 12, which is likely what it would take. Even losing one game would be challenging. Then, to turn around and win two more against the elite teams? Don't see that happening. Rich Rod was their best hope, but they weren't willing to look beyond his transgressions and enhance the facilities for him.

Basketball has a chance. A hot team can make a six game run, and cut down the nets. This could have been the year they had that chance. Good mix of shooters that doesn't come around that often. You only need a couple studs, and a few role players to be good, so that could happen for them in hoops. Will we live to see it? Doubtful, but it's possible.

As I stated, I don't hate then in spite of their actions! Would like to see them live up to their assertions about where they fit into the college athletics landscape. I agree with you , there was a path for them to actually win something of note besides BB gun shooting contests!

What I took from all of these posts is that Tony is 64? Damn. I'll need to nicer to my elders when posting. Him and snow sled.
