Paige, Burton Earn First Weekly Honors Of New Year
Irving, Texas – Two guards - Jaysean Paige of West Virginia and Iowa State’s Deonte Burton - are the first 2016 winners of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week. WVU captures a weekly honor for the first time this season, while Burton is recognized for the second week in a row. He is one of three Cyclones to earn a conference weekly accolade in 2015-16.

Paige averaged 21.0 points and 6.0 rebounds as West Virginia recorded two wins last week. The senior guard posted 17 points and grabbed five rebounds in an 88-63 victory at Virginia Tech. He then followed with a career-high 25 points to go with seven rebounds in a double-overtime win at K-State. Paige shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the field for the week while totaling 12 rebounds (eight offensive), two assists and one steal. He is one of four Mountaineers averaging at least 12 points (12.3 ppg) in 2015-16 and is shooting 52.2 percent on the year.

Burton scored 19 points against Oklahoma just three days after tallying 17 points against Coppin State as he continued his strong play off the bench for the Cyclones. The junior transfer from Marquette has increased his scoring total in every game since becoming eligible. He shot 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the field last week, including 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from 3-point range. Against the Sooners, his 19 points came in 20 minutes of action. Burton also tallied 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals for the week. He is averaging 13.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and shooting 67.7 percent from the field on the season.
