Is there a better way to choose a CFP field? As committee faces backlash, leaders in the sport ponder changes

11 D1 conferences...all get in....add one high ranked non conf winner...and everyone has a seat at table. Best way

There isn't a number of teams or method of selection in which everyone will be satisfied and there isn't a rational argument on why it isn't fair. I said that years ago when they first started the selecting top two teams ranked, said it again before expansion to four teams, said it again past few years before this expansion. It is imperfect and always will be. Quit fooling around thinking it can be fair to everyone.

I find this year to be exciting and the regular season mattered for more teams longer. It exceeded my expectations. But at least one and possibly up to three teams will feel screwed next week. No way around it. My advice, don't lose games you should win late in the season.

Win your conference and you’re in!! I get tired of this team should be in over this team because they’re better. You didn’t win your conference so shut up!! Include all conferences.

10 years ago: "We need a playoff. Make it happen. The BCS is rigged"

Today: "The playoff is rigged. We need a new system."

:joy: :joy: :joy: :joy:
Alabama is getting in with 3 losses. They were embarrassed by a 5-6 Oklahoma team that held them to 3 points. They also lost to 6-6 Vandy. Doesn't exactly scream we are better than all the rest. There is a better way to do but the media wouldn't be able to get 5 SEC teams and 4 Big 10 teams in the playoffs that way.

Go to 16. There are 11 conferences. Take the conference champs. Have 5 wild card teams. Reseed the teams when after the season and before playoffs. Could still do it with 12 teams by having the 11 conference champs and 1 wild card team.

You want to complain about not making it then win your freaking conference.

Three loss Alabama is considered a lock to make playoffs.

Correct, and when they do, junk all the bowls.

It’s never been about which are the best teams to be in a playoff. It’s always been about getting the most popular teams that can be “reasonably?” justified to be in the playoffs and will give the greatest revenue to the networks that broadcast the games. Period

I think right now is basically perfect. The teams with truly exceptional regular seasons are rewarded with byes, G5 has their seat at the table and can prove out any grievances on the field, and there’s enough at large spots so 97% of the teams aren’t playing meaningless games in November. There’s also enough exposure for the Big XII and ACC that those conferences might have a case in the future for pulling back members of the B1G and SEC that fall by the wayside (OU).

If I had a suggested tweak it would be that at larges should be eligible for byes, the CCGs shouldn’t hold that much weight IMO, but I guess that’s a tough sell for the networks if last night’s Texas UGA game had very little stakes.

Can't wait to hear the 'Bama apologists cry about SMU and the "but we play in the SEC" bullcrap. Maybe they shouldn't have lost to a 6-6 Vandy team? Or to a even crappier 6-6 Oklahoma team? It's not just about who you beat......it's also about who you lose to.

Maybe they should have 16 teams 11 conference champions get in and 5 at Large.

CFB is very different than CBB, allowing all G5 champs in means you basically trimmed the field by 4 and added a bunch of scrimmages to the bracket. CUSA simply by existing does not deserve to have a team leapfrog 100 teams that are better than its champion and stick them in a prestigious tournament. G5 most years produces 1 team that can cause problems for the best in the sport. Army just went 11-1 in a traditionally solid G5 conference and still lost by a gazillion points to ND. The talent in this sport is simply not spread out enough to justify a similar format to March Madness.

Get rid of the flipping labels reorganize the conferences so they're regional in members and not cross the country. Guarantee you would have the best of best then.

But at this rate it's going to end up being SEC and BIG 10 only. You'll have 40 teams and adopt the NFL strategy for playoffs. It's coming soon.

Agreed. We’re almost there, NIL does complicate things though since there is no barrier to entry for any team just coming in and throwing money around and turning the sport on its head. A billionaire alum can come in and play GM if they want at any school, so who’s to say UTEP can’t show up with a bag and play tomorrow? Blocking out that many schools leaves the sport vulnerable to outside competition so it’s best to allow access for now.

Well said.
