Virginia Tech won two games in his first season, and by his third, the Hokies had climbed to six wins. By his sixth, they had fallen back to two. In six seasons in Blacksburg, Beamer produced a record of 24-40-2 (.379).

The fact we are celebrating Beamer's career today, one in which he has won 54 more games than any other man currently coaching in the FBS, illustrates how the pressures in college football have increased. When Beamer began, conventional wisdom dictated that coaches got five years to establish their program. Today, they may get three. Salaries have skyrocketed, and so have the demands that come with them.

The idea that in today's game a coach could win two games in his sixth season and get a seventh one is about as likely as converting a fourth-and-20. And yet look what happened. Beamer got to coach a seventh season, in 1993. The Hokies won nine games. And they kept winning. You know the rest.

I don't think there could ever be found any evidence that paying higher salaries has increased the number of wins in college football. In every game played there is one winner and one loser no matter how much each coach is paid.

But quite often, in many kinds of situations (no just coaching), a period of success emerges after a half dozen, or more, years.

It might be argued that big salaries, and the pressure that comes with them, actually might circumvent success in may cases.

hard to believe that Bud Foster isn't and hasn't gotten a shot at some head coaching job..he's 55 or 56..what the hell

Can you imagine how big of a temper tantrum some of our fans would throw if WVU had lost to East Carolina, Pitt, Miami and Duke this year?

What does that have to do with anything?

I doubt Hokie fans are doing cartwheels over those losses.

But we are WVU.....where we now accept mediocrity.

Others around here presumably have a more informed perspective on this point, but I've somehow gotten the impression over the years that Foster is among THE worst interviewers ever. Of course, since his dream job presumably has ALWAYS been down the hallway, it can probably be persuasively argued he therefore never pursued any other HC job as seriously as one might expect from the outside.

OTOH, I'm fairly sure he's been among THE highest paid assistants in the country for a fairly long time, so Tech has at least earned his loyalty. But I guess I always thought he privately expected Beamer to hang it up at least 3 or so years ago. Anyway, it'll be VERY interesting to see if he FINALLY gets his shot in Blacksburg; guess it depends to what extent Whit feels the Program needs to be torn down and rebuilt.

I wonder if the consensus among Tech fans......who I myself am not exposed to......will prove to be award the good and loyal soldier or bring in a new regime. Guess I sort of assume it'll be the latter, as fans always think what they don't have currently is pretty-much automatically going to be better.

The salaries have changed even more with the times so it comes with the job.

To put it in perspective, Frank Beamer probably got hired for under $100,000 in 1987. In 2014, he made $2,020,672 and that is a very low salary for that job according to Wikipedia. Next coach at VT will make over $3-3.5 Million EASY! for their first contract (Heck remember Dick Rod made double in his First season than what Donald EUGENE Nehlen made in his last).

To refresh the old noggin, in 1987 the season tickets at WVU were under $100 or maybe $120 at the most where I sit and that includes mandatory "donation". Now I'm averaging paying more than that per game (which is why I loved the neutral site game a few years back vs JMU at Fed Ex). I'd say they were even less at VPI given how bad that program was in 87.

This is why when any college head coach loses their job or is forced out, I really got no sympathy. They got guaranteed $$$$$ on the back end of the contract to do nothing but move on to the next job or sit on their butt and play golf. Now at most P5 jobs, even the assistant coaches have multi year deals (minimum 2). I save the sympathy for the coal miner, steel worker, auto worker, etc who lose their jobs and got no golden parachute to deploy.

To me it is entertainment. Just keep it interesting and keep me entertained.
